If you really want all the pain of one of those god awful things then look in south africa. I was looking on south african gumtree to see if there was anything interesting to import and the only stuff I found that would probably turn a profit over here were lots of these heaps without the scene tax. Obviously out there you need a motor that will get you home if you do venture out into the wilderness which rules out type 2's. Sorry I really shouldn't be so nasty about them as I am sure they have plenty of fans who love them dearly. Shipping from the states will be 1200 minimum from the east coast and about 2k from the west. Try west coast shipping as they have a quick quote set up on their website, CFR Rinkens who are doing mine have a quote option that might be more accurate as it asks for vehicle type and a T2 might be a lot dearer than a normal car as they can't get 4 in a 20ft container.

Presumably despite that, the engines are easy enough to swap out. Possible to easily convert back to carbs?
I think that it's easy to convert to carbs but never really looked into it as my engine is a Type 1 and those are Type 4. It'll be covered on the TLB forum I imagine. I think that the Dells are pretty expensive though.

South African ones have a really bad reputation as they're very often run into the ground with no maintenance and then tarted up to look good in pics.

I used to drive Marina vans and they were fine but the seat on this thing was just too far forward and not adjustable so the only distance it ever went was the trip home from buying it. I did try camping out in it in the back garden and that sealed it's fate. Flogged off at a loss and it ended up in the James Hull collection that went to Jaguar Land Rover, then sold at auction a few years ago so it is still alive and providing shit transport somewhere.

I liked the idea of those, and the earlier Sun-Tor A55 types but ultimately you lose too much potential space with the car layout vs. forward control. Did the Marina have those awful flip-flop seatbacks that the Austins did? They can't have helped driving comfort at all.
There's a great long bar in Rock & Roll heaven.......

The one I had the seats formed a bed in the front as well which made them far bigger than normal which is why you couldn't adjust it far enough back for comfort. If it had normal van seats it would of been ok. It would of slept 4 if you were all small or very friendly with each other.

Same as US ones then but maybe without the expanding foam. It would be better to go for a project one as they are less likely to hide the grot.
