“I bought a diesel for the fuel economy”
Usually said to me by someone who lives 5 minutes away from work and seldom goes anywhere else.

Like my old boss who'd drive miles endways to save a penny a litre on fuel.

Yes but they are excellent value, offering as they do a cast-iron guarantee of servicing, mechanical longevity and careful ownership.

The majority of speed limits are for safety.

Re: Mistaken automotive beliefs
And speeding is automatically unsafe, and staying below the limit is automatically safe in all circumstances. This was fabulously illustrated in one of Eddie's Crash Bang Wallop posts where some twatish bellend has smashed up his fancy Mercedes by not noticing the presence of frozen run-off water at the exit from a tunnel (or somehow thinking his car would "deal with it").
The Police suggested he shouldn't have been in a quite such a rush - and a load of fellow bellends tweeted that they were "just jealous of his nice car" and he "wasn't speeding" entirely missing the point that the crash was entirely avoidable by proper driving.
