Oh, yeah, I forgot about Land Rover. I have no idea why people like series LR, they are horrible to drive, noisy, ratlly, drafty, hardly move and barely stop. Just about anything else is better.

A series 1 and a series 3 LWB were two of the worst vehicles I have ever driven but I suppose the early ones were acceptable when there was no competition. Why anybody would buy a Discovery over a Shogun though is beyond me. "ah but the parts are cheap for Land Rovers" well buy Japanese then you won't need as many.

Vauxhall Carlton 2.0 manual.
I thought this had the potential to be a decent usable daily driver but it was just rubbish.
I swapped a datsun stanza plus cash for it with JohnK.
It ran like shit, kept cutting out and broke down on the way home due to his mechanical expertise.
His version of fixing its issues were to run some redex through the carb and do adjust the distributor timing until it ran OK.
I ended up having the carb stripped, cleaned and rebuilt with new gaskets and set up the distributor with a timing light.
It ran much better but was still a hateful piece of shit.
Also everyone lost their shit when I removed the hubcaps, admittedly maybe I shouldn't have said I'd binned them but it seems I can't do anything with a car I own without upsetting somebody.

Anyway back to the Carlton, I think I've repressed most memories of ownership but what I do remember is it had shit blowers, the clutch/gear change felt awkward, there was a flickering brake warning light and people were constantly mistaking it as a cavalier.
The final straw was the starter motor seizing when out shopping and having the aa guy bump starting it in the supermarket carpark.Image

Because the steering on a Shogun is as vague as fuck compared to a Discovery, for a start. I test-drove a mate's 54-plate Shogun a few weeks ago and it was horrible compared to my Disco 2 in many, many respects.

Another thread has just reminded me of this - Pug 205 Gti.

Everyone raves about them as brilliant hot hatches yet they are utterly wank, gutless, poor handling piles of shit with a wank driving position.

May I politely suggest that you drove a fucked one?

Of the hot Peugeots of that era, the 309 GTI 1.9 was a nicer car but received far less adulation. Way easier to drive fast but probably a few tenths slower for a driver with actual talent.
I always thought the GTI 1.6 was the sweeter of the 205 GTI range; my favourite is still the XS/GT even though it's a fair bit slower. The Euro market Rallye (ie the actual homologation special rather than a UK XS with a sticker pack) is a pain in the arse if you're not in the mood.

Always pissed me off that the 205 GTI was constantly compared with the Mk2 Golf GTI; they're in a different size and segment class.
I also hate the Mk2 Golf dashboard - it's a discordant mess with a few nice switches on it.

I prefer the 306 GTI-6 to be honest, even though it's a generation on.

You may suggest that but others said it was a good one. It just didn't impress me at all, in any way. Nova Gte was a better car & that's saying something.

Can't come back to that - never driven a Nova. Pedalled plenty of Corsas, and I couldn't give a shit if they're cheap and easy to fix.

The 205GTI is now way overpriced and massively overstated in terms of its abilities and significance, but that's what happens when 'investors' pile into a market.

The Nova was a much nicer car to drive than the Corsa IMO.
