Well that went well. Finally managed to spend a few minutes on the fuel sender. It's in the top half of the wedge-shaped fuel tank.
After asking for advice in SFQ I decided to jack it up and tilt it a bit to (hopefully) have all the fuel down the other end. Predictably as I started to undo the retaining ring, petrol poured out all over me, fortunately I managed (after a lot of swearing) to get it back on and sealed again.
This is going to have to wait until I have more time, but at least I now know for certain there's too much juice in there. Also need a decent can or two - I only have two of those plastic 5 litre ones and they are full..
Whilst down there I found a decidedly crusty looking bit of sill which is going to need attention soon.

Round two today and so far so shit
I removed 35 litres of fuel so at least that's no longer an issue - there was much more in the tank than I thought.
I removed the sealing ring and now the sender unit is free, but do you think it will come up through the hole?

Having a few mins off as the fumes are starting to affect me.
Doing anything like this with petrol gives me the fear - especially when everywhere reeks of it. At least I am doing it outside.
I daren't just chop the thing off as I don't want to be battering at stuff and potentially sparking off a fire/explosion.

Progress made - I left it a bit and then went back, managed to fish the sender oot.
As predicted, it's not the same as the NOS one I got.
However I think I can see the problem with the old one -
The wee track thing with the copper wire is totally absent.
I reckon it was there when I put this tank in a few years back to replace the lash-up that was there (a tank off flip knows what), so I imagine it disintegrated at some point.

I decided the best* plan was to replace the wire track from the new sender into the body of the old one.

OK, so far so average. Got it all back together on Sunday - started the car and it ran fine for about five minutes, then cut out and refuses to restart. I assumed I was out of fuel but I've put most of it back and checked the electric pump is delivering it by whipping the pipe off and running it so I can see it flow.
My guess is I've introduced some crap into the carb. Typically for me I've done without an inline fuel filter.
I guess it could be on the electrical side - but I reckon the float is jammed or the jets blocked.
Place bets now.

Those senders, despite being very primitive are generally bloody good, I've mended a few now, make sure to orient it the correct way, although sometimes the arrangement of screws on the lid precludes you getting it wrong!
