To be fair you might expect 23 years old rubber to perish.
As I suspected I was right about everything.

I'm only guessing it's original, car has barely over 76k so it's the only plausible explanation.

I'm sure I mentioned earlier in this thread that I noticed that the fuel pipe was on its way out.

That's a possibility. I can't recall it though or I'd have had it remedied. My memory is utter shite to be honest!

I know I replaced the low pressure fuel pipe on 14 a couple of years ago as it was falling apart, I did the same on the Hornet last year. Both are about the same age.

Further thought: Being relatively recent new-fangled tosh, aren't the fuel pipes actually plastic? Are you sure you were looking at the fuel feed and return pipes?
I knew I'd mentioned it here before.

The filler neck I think is plastic on this with a metal piece and rubber pipe when the tank is ful to act as an overflow. Had the same issue on the focus but that was a complete metal unit with metal overflow. Plastic and rubber is better in that it can be repaired cheaper.

That's OK, it's easy to be distracted when your new company car arrives. I remember back in 1988 when our company XR3is arrived and whilst my fellow new reps, Steve Devains and Leroy Ledegie were whinging about them not having alloys, I was on the phone to head office in Coppul trying to find another rep who fancied swapping his two year old company 2.8i Capri for a newer and more trendy Mk4 Xr3i.

Just incase you're wondering, I didn't find anyone willing to swap a 2.8i Special for an XR3i but later that year when we sacked off the XRs and leased Sierra 2.0GLs I had plenty of offers to swap my car for a new Sierra.
