What I found interesting was how grim that street was. Usually on older photos, the color composition makes them look nicer than what they are.

Its telling to me on how overfilled that bin is and the litter around it. Also the dirt and grime down the concrete doesn't help either.

Cities were generally filthy back then - literally blackened a lot of the time. Houses of Parliament were almost completely black, as was Tower of London and most other landmarks I visited as a kid. Airborne pollution has obviously reduced considerably since then but also cleaning technology has significantly increased. Against this, though, was a strong regime of street cleansing with rather dubious chemicals being water-sprayed across pavements on an almost daily basis in some places.
