Re: Found pics
Boeing did the Clippers I think. We had Short Sandringhams etc, Google the TEAL Coral route for when flying was good.

Re: Found pics
WW2 caused loads of airfields with decent runways to be built around the world, without that planes like the Princess would have had their day in the sun.

Re: Found pics
There was a Princess cocooned on a slipway by our local beach for years when I was a kid, can still remember it - wings clipped, nacelles wrapped. It got towed up the river and scrapped eventually. Apologies for crap pictures but they are getting on a bit now....
At the beach, probably around 1964.
Despite some interest being shown for specialist airlift all three airframes were broken up by 1967 around the Southampton area.
These aircraft were, of course, manufactured by Saunders-Roe before the company turned to hovercraft production at the Isle of Wight factory.

Re: Found pics
Such a waste. I believe they shared a lot of design components with the Brabazon as well?

Re: Found pics
I'm not sure about any Brabazon connection. Certainly of similar era and design intent but these had Proteus engines I think whereas the Brabazon had Centaurus. Similarly doomed by the rapid postwar winds of change, though.....

Re: Found pics
I think it was the Brabazon design committee that planned these and some other post war civil airliners.
I wonder what they would have thought about O Leary, Ryanair and Boeing's cheapskate manufacturing, currently focusing on trying to fix 787 fuselage gaps.

I don't think they'd have understood modern air travel at all.

Re: Found pics
I agree.
Even the early 70s, when I first flew abroad, it was far different to now. It was an event not an ordeal. It's just become commoditised, like lots of other things.
End of old man moan.
