Playing the logic game - the Passat was, say, 30 years old at the time. Vitesse (assuming it's a Mk2 in that colour) would be an estimated 15 years older than the VW. Let's assume then that the mystery vehicle is half that age difference and arrive at an arbitrary period of 1959/60.

OK, so back in the day the fella buys a house but is not yet at the new-ish Vitesse stage which is the bit between basic transportation and giffer/grandad level that requires a 5 door hatchback of indeterminate desirability. His previous car is therefore likely to be a bit cheap and a bit dull.

It is too low a profile to be a Ford Pop and looks to have a similar profile and roof height to the Triumph. I reckon it is likely to be an A40 Farina.

Just noticed this delightfully crisp cab in the background of an eBay boat listing.

That is indeed a joy to behold.
