Name that plastic!

Post by DodgeRover »

Have got an Atco Admiral mower to repair and the plastic deck has cracked round the height adjustment.
I've looked over it and can't see any identifying maths as to what type of plastic it is, I tried superglue last year but it only lasted a couple of months.
The other identical mower I've got has a crack in a different place that I only just found when I went to make a good one from the 2...
Any idea what type off plastic it may be so I can buy the correct glue?

Don't glue it, weld it.

I'm not expert but I imagine it's some nylon mix to strengthen it up. Not sure if that's even fixable. Looks heavily UV damaged too.

You could roll a length of sheet metal into a cylinder of the right circumference, snip an inch or two up its length at intervals so you can form a flange and Araldite it into the hole and Araldite the top bit to the "chimney" once the bottom's gone off. I'd imagine there'd be some rotational forces on it though when you switch cuts....

You want to use some of the cobwebs out of my shed, too - they stick to fucking everything.....

If doing the above, glass mat and epoxy resin.

Access from the rear isn't easy, I had thought about a top hat type insert to take the load, will have to have better look what access there actually is and what dismantling is required.

It's actually not to bad UV damage wise it's just surface crazing rather than decay.
They area shit design though..

If super glue lasted that long maybe try Q Bond? The stuff sets like concrete and you could pile it round that quite nicely?

As SiC said, it’s probably some co-polymer with nylon in it for temperature stability. The problem with that is, while it’s pretty strong in the first place Cyanoacrylate aka superglue won’t melt it together very well.

Superglue is best used on styrene based polymers, like ABS or PVC based polymers.

You could try welding it using a blowtorch soldering iron using a zip tie as the filler, but that probably won’t last long either.

If you have access to glass fiber and resin, I would be tempted to make some metal splints with holes in the end, pop rivet the part back in place with the splints and then glass over the lot, using the splits to help anchor the GRP to the nylon body. If you don’t have GRP, two part epoxy, again using the metal splint parts as anchors, could strengthen the area up.

Or buy a couple of the parts as spares and find out why the mechanism is so stiff, it’s snapping the housing!
