Their car, a marked BMW X5 which had its emergency lights on, was struck from behind by a Citroen C4, which then spun into the opposing lane and collided with two other vehicles.

One officer was thrown into a ditch while the other was knocked unconscious and trapped underneath the police vehicle.

He was freed by his colleague before being taken to hospital for 'assessment'.

The Citroen driver, a 77-year-old woman, was physically uninjured, but was also taken to hospital for observations as a precaution.
