Astra down for the count. Lost a nights money and unsure what the hell to do. Further investigation tomorrow to see what's worth doing. No cheap ish cars available near me either. Fuck.

Situation is as follows. Since I've owned the car I've don 6000 miles,MOT on it and serviced it twice,last one being last week along with a new fuel filter. A few days ago it started with a resonance under load then juddering when taking up drive. Had friendly mechanic have a look and he's said there is a slight noise from the bottom end. He's checked the car the other day and the list it will need is:
2 tyres getting close to legal limit along with vibration through steering getting worse at motorway speeds so may need to get wheels balanced
The rear arches/inner sills have 23 years of crud built up behind the plastic skirts and has had a detrimental impact on the sills/lower arches which will need investigation/remedy
Previously mentioned low compression on number 4.
Which brings me on to tonight. Left for work at 440 and things were grand u til I was heading over a back lane and got a strong smell of burning and loss of power. Pulled up,switched off and had a look. Couldn't see anything untoward be t told takeaway I won't be risking it and headed for home. Started juddering again when taking up drive and by time I'd gone the mile back home the smell was immense so popped bonnet and had a lot of thick grey smoke from the right side of block/gearbox. Grabbed hose to douse what I could and left bonnet up.
More investigation will be done tomorrow by mechanic and see what's to do but with the known issues already and whatever has caused the issue tonight I'm not sure the best cause of action. Mechanic is going on holiday Tuesday too so don't want nor expect him to do much work even though he is a good friend.

Could be. Warren said he thought it was down to 25% approximately when I first had it but Paul did say he thought his friend who owned it replaced the clutch. Me and my friend have spoken of the bottom end noise maybe something being transmitted down the crank which would fit.

My old mate was rather heavy on the clutch. He he's told me a few times how he holds it on the clutch on hills and had had smoke billowing out on more than one occasion.
