That's an early one with the Formica dash, changed to wood veneer after 2-3 months as it was so shit. We didn't get the 2 door MG1100 which seems odd. It flopped in the US and mags like Road and Track panned it.

Now sold and off to a good home. I'm sad as I loved this little car and haven't had much of a chance to buzz around in, but the cash is useful for my other projects!
Won't be my last ADO16 though. But when I get another, it will have to be my ideal spec - 1300 with 2drs. Or maybe GT....
Alternatively I'd still get a Mini if I could find one for sane money.

The best car is a sold car. The one to buy is the white 2 door 1300 belonging to someone on The Beige. A solid car, it so badly needs some love. The 1300 was so much better than the 1100 Mark1. The twin carb ones with the servo especially so.

Yes that car I've pestered him repeatedly if he ever wants to sell.
The 1100 engine and gearing is alright for pottering around on b-roads and slow a-roads, but 60mph it's screaming it's head off.

This is the one car that didn't fail to put a smile on my face every time I drove it. Builder doing our kitchen went for a spin in it yesterday afternoon and within seconds of starting up, he was grinning ear to ear too.
I fear the 520i will be too sophisticated and clinical to do the same. But then that can be driven hundreds of miles.

Re: 1968 Austin 1100 Mk1 (Take 2)
This is the only pic I have of CJO73D as bought wearing the wrong size tyres. . It was bought new in January 1966 by a BMC Cowley employee and was restored in 1998 with new wings etc. Then he died and the car ended up with so relatives who ruined it, running into a wall damaging the front wing and then running the engine out of oil, destroying the crank. Once it had been rescued from these idiots we had to buy another 1100 from Devon for a good engine. It was a 1963 Austin with four nearly new Camac tyres. I bought a new wing at the 1100 OC meeting in Notts. It came up really well and drove superbly. I’ve no idea where it is now or if it even exists.
Behind it is a Trafalgar blue 1300 auto 2 door with a very good shell that I used to reshell a rotten but mechanically perfect 69 1100.

Re: 1968 Austin 1100 Mk1 (Take 2)
It was a good wee thing. I drove it one morning up to the Retro Cars event at Santa Pod in 2006 and it really buzzed all the way there and back. Penny Mallory parked her lovely arse down next to it and leaned against the rear door.
The 1100 was a remarkable design, a shame BMC didn't finish it off. Stuart Bladon, an Autocar staffer was very unkind about it in his autobiography.
