Fantasy classic league - investment edition

Post by AMCrebel »

Hypothetical of course.

What would you buy (single car) for £25-£35k if you had the cash sitting in the bank and wanted it to do as well as a savings account?

Obviously there's the joy* of ownership, but you can't put a price on that.

Seems as soon as I see a classic I like, the prices either shoot beyond reach or plummet......

Hoping for roffle win :)

Ok I will play first up this little Lotus. Maybe a bit dear but it has a lot going for it if looked after and not restored.

Just searching ebay in that price range and I think it will be all Lotus. Small engines for running costs and fun will never go out of fashion.

Another vote here for a first generation Elise. Or for less money, a VX220 in a good colour.

Lotuses never really have increased in value though. Even Elans are pretty cheap considering its a Chapman thoroughbred.

I’d struggle to get in and out of one of those plastic things now , let alone in 5 or 10 years whilst I’m waiting for it to make my fortune.
An Aston or 911 of some sort would be a safe bet , I suppose but I know I’d get bored within 6 months and then resent the money I’d have to spend to keep them worth anything.
No, if it’s going to be a massive money pit it needs to be something I’ve always wanted.

With apologies to GBU and it’s description of the Capri, I know it’s just a Turbo R in a Party Frock. But just look at it…

For me it'd be a Clio Trophy

And Civic Type R EP3

Other contenders are BMW E60 M5, BMW E90 M3, Nissan 350Z and a Mazda RX8 R3 (or pro-drive if the budget isn't there). Audi R8, Porsche 996 Turbo but they've gone up a fair bit and likewise the DB9 or Vantage.

All the star cars of my era who are just getting the money in the next decade to afford such vehicles as toys.

A well looked after, well sorted TVR Cerbera. Always liked them (even though my cousin had a rather unreliable Griffin, and he loved it) but never brave enough to pull the trigger.
