Building the Leg End. The Old Jag thread.

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

The big problem to my eyes is the wheels are so deep in the arches it nearly looks like a monorail. By fitting wider wheels in the right place, the lightweight solved that.

Btw I believe the standard E-tyre had the same size tyres as the XR3, 185/60R14.
I think that was pretty typical in that era. The Dino was 185 on a 14 inch wheel. Mind you knowing William Lyons penchant for saving pennies he probably prohibited wider tyres as they'd cost a fraction more.

Some prick on the beige would call this a Fun Fact but did you know that the designer, Malcolm Sayer, came from Cromer? It's not all 6 fingers and turnips around here and we have a very pleasant paucity of gibbons.

Aye I know it was a typical size for quick cars back then. I found it interesting when I found out as I had a MK3 Escort on XR3 Cloverleafs at the time, so I've never forgotten it.

I could take this as far back as the John Egan days.

In defence of the XJ40, It took about eight years before I saw a truly rotten example. Something I cant say about the W210 Mercedes.
John Egan admitted that the 1.6 billion or whatever Ford paid basically just bought the name and the ability for their execs in Dearborn to have Jags as their company cars. It also put one over on GM which probably mattered more than anything to them.
Ford pissed away billions on Jaguar, Volvo and Land Rover. We can all be internet experts but Ford execs didn't have a clue what they were doing. Coming out with shit like the X Type and that hideous S Type cartoon Jag. Then they ramped up Volvo prices because they thought Volvo buyers would pay Merc or BMW money, without actually improving the car. The results were predictable.

I quite likes the S type. At least it was a jag rather than the fucking X type mondeo.
I borrowed my mates S type a few times when they were current and found it a nice place to sit and pretty quick for a big barge. 3.0 pez.

He didn't mention the biggest & most expensive rot spot of the lot. Bottom of the front inner wings where they join the floor & the sills.

I seem to remember that it was based on a US Lincoln platform so was similar to the X Type.

No it wasn't. It was some Yank Ford dressed up as a faux Jag. It was also built by Brummies.

If it wasn't built at Foleshill or Browns Lane, it's not a Jaguar.

Jim Randle pretty much said as much. Proper Jaguar was Lyons and Egan plus a lot of very talented engineers designing and building world beating cars for 10p and a Mars Bar.
