Forcing us off the roads?

Post by 8BAK465 »

Ever get that feeling?

I know my car is rare but I am experiencing difficulty getting some basic bits lately

When I was rewiring my headlights to RHD Could I hell get sidelight bulb holders

My tyres are 13" and in that profile and width they are getting hardr and harder and harder to get

Now its oil!

When I had my Classic Mini 20w50 was getting harder to get now its 10w40

Yes you can get it but the prices for cheap generic shit is even going through the roof :x

Call me cynical but it seem like they are slowely but surely making things harder for us

Anybody know where i can get hald decent 10w40 oil that fits the size of a Wobbers Purse? Jeez I need nearly 7 Litres!

The Greedy Bastard

Sorry that I can't help with the oil search but It's old car syndrome.

Even shopping cars have 15" wheels now so fewer and fewer firms make smaller tyres and fewer retailers stock them so you end up with an upward spiral in prices. Some specialists have special runs of tyres made , even for Moggy 1000s I believe, that cost an absolute fortune.

Try any of the classic* oils companies, it looks easy enough to find 10w40 online. Just one example is https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Total-CLASSI ... 2259622233

It's a throwaway rather than a mend it society now.
I want the latest version today and I'll buy it on the never never.

I wrote this recently on a YouTube video about driving a huge V8 as a daily

The video was all in dollars but I decided to do some sums myself using My Mustang as V8 Daily v 2019 Golf Petrol DSG if I were to do the whole PCP thing this is what I found...................

At 3.35 when you say the fairlane is behind by $2.185.98 it is really already ahead by $5000 as the $5000 you paid you now own it ;) Typically thesedays new car purchase is a very small percentage and most pay these astronmical figures shown on the Corolla just to lease the vehicle and never own it! This is even more insane! As then the $5000 and more to the point everything you pay to quote Dire Straits is really Money For Nothing! Im in the UK I have a 75 Mustang with a Smallblock V8 what my mileage allows would cost me £2500 per year fuel whereas an "economical" petrol car would cost £1000 but at present my American car in the UK cost me £2000 + £1800 (import etc) plus around £2000 to get it right lets round all that up to £6000 gbp. To lease (Not Own) a economical mid sized car per year for deposit/Payment/Admin fees/VAT etc I came up with £6160 and I dont own it! £1000 fuel per year Mine is £2500 Insurance is £500 on new car mine is £200 Road tax on new car £145 Mine £0 MOT Inspection after three years if you keep it and no faults found? £54 Mine £0 Minor Service (Oil Filter) £179 Mine about £30 DIY Ive sorted all the major bits in my £2000 maintainance in the first year Total cost year one for shiney new thing you dont own £7984 Total cost Year one for Interesting Classic you do own £8500 So £516 extra but its mine :) so year two no deposit on new and no purchase price on old Taking into account monthly payment/no monthly payment plus higher tax insurance and depreciation and the fact that now in UK my American car is worth at least all its cost me so far.... New car £5124 + Depreciation of £5500 (1 year old same speced model at main dealer) Mine £2730 + Depreciation £0 Even if you don't count depreciation because my example is non own lease I am still £2394 better off ;) Plus have at least a £6000 investment at the end of a three year lease whereas the Lease Holder doesnt own their car Based on three year lease End of lease costs new car £18232 End of three years Classic owned outright £13960 assuming no appreciation - £6000 if I was to sell = £7960 leaves me not driving boring new car and £10272 better off :) At least ;) Chances are by 3 years if cared for it will be worth practically what it cost over the three years so selling it the cost of motoring could be free? I knew the cost benefits overall were good but watching this video has made me calculate and Wow! We only live once drive something interesting before we are all forced into electric appliances..........................

Supply and demand. Less cars need tiny tyres and treacle thick oil so production quantity goes down and the unit price goes up.
Same story for spare bits, not to mention increasingly rare NOS stuff going up in value. Dolly arch repair panels used to be less than £40 a pair, now they are £150+.

20w50 has been £20-25 for 4l for as long as I've been bunging it in the Dolly. If it makes you feel better my mate went shopping for 0w30 for his Bimmer t'other day and Castrol's offering was £20 a litre...

Check out a local oil supplies place Aztec Oils near Chesterfield has most grades in stock, any cheap oil really is cheap though, will go off spec much faster as it has less additives, with frequent changes I doubt you will notice much difference in wear though.

Just seen that horrible cheap 20/50 in the builders merchants, the stuff with a chequered flag on the otherwise white container. I'm sure it's made from used oil and has lumps in it, but the worst thing is that they want 19.99 for 5 litres of the lumpy piss. Having said that I use just about anything in my b series with no I'll results. It's on 0 something synthetic because someone left me 5litres in their will along with an old deck chair and millions of rusty bike spanners.
MG strokers will caution against using thin modern stuff but it's no rattlier now than 8,000 miles ago when it went in. Long service intervals are due to running on LPG, lube still looks like new.
Anyway, my usual recipe for old motors is "Fleet" 15/40 semi synthetic, now around £40 for 20liters.
