Measuring rotational speed.

Question gentlemen; I have been a tuning cars again and would like to measure rpms more precisely than via a jumping needle on a 50 yr old gauge, is there some sort of electrikery powered gadget available that one can point at a flywheel/pulley/fan/shaft that will accurately measure the rpms?

Acshually I have I think found a caucasian purveyor of fine electrical instruments of the Clarke variety!
