Probably worth putting a test meter across the sender to earth, you should get some sort of resistance showing.
Now done and showing this

Dead pleased with "hold" function on meter - seemed spurious at the time but very glad of it now.
T'inernet says
9 ohms full, 73 empty.
(But also a lot of contradictory stuff)
But it's looking encouraging - I ran a new wire to the sender (last 30cm or so under the car) just in case that was the source of the issue.

Ok so that didn't help - whatever that reading is on the meter - it's of no interest to the gauge which remains steadfastly at empty unless you earth the wire and then it climbs rapidly. I suspect I may have to admit to myself and the world that the sender is fucked despite being only 53 years old and having received zero attention in the 20+ years it languished in the parts car without moving
Getting a replacement is going to be *funny though.
Edit - maybe that actually was 5.2 M ohms on the meter - if so that's a huge number and no wonder it reads empty.

I have some residual doubts about that part being the right one - the fuel tank is unique to the convertible and 2 door hardtop - which were rare as flip to start with and passage of time hasn't helped, however the aperture and sealing ring are the same for 99% of AMCs and I reckon I can make the rest work. I plan to fit an earth wire to the new one before installation too.

No sign of the fuel sender - seller has previous bad feedback for listing stuff and then not being able to find it but let's wait and see.
In the meantime I found more rocking horse shit in the form of these -

Mine has only two of the original switches left and they're fucked.
If I can bag these it will be great but need to see if the seller will ship here from USA.

If not, I'm a not-snowed-in halfway house if needs be.

Thanks Phil, much appreciated - hopefully he can resolve it with eBay - he says they have an international fulfilment center in Tennesse.

Yeah, most people call that The Post Office.

Fuel sender arrived. Testing with 2 meters suggests this is the later version from the 70s that needs 12v to the gauge. I'll find out when I can be bothered to go out the garage.
