Split_Pin wrote: Fri Jul 02, 2021 11:14 pm The Audi's exhaust I blowing quite a bit now. Its 21 years old so has had a good innings.

New ones aren't available for the 1.8 and the pompous prick at a local exhaust fabrication place sent me packing with my scrap. Clearly they only want to work in Golf Rs and Mercedes AMGs.

I think the 2.0 exhaust is similar behind the downpipe and it's quite cheap from Ebay. It's worth a shot.
Word on the web is mibbie the 2.3 exhaust is the one to go for. So I dug out the parts list to see what the scores on the doors were:

The 1.8 ADR exhaust appears to be 4 sections manifold (2) + cat and pre-silencer (26) + middle silencer ((2)) + rear silencer ((3))

8fa77c9d1c64d59a6210656c59aa8acf-480x554.gif

Starting at the rear ((3)), there are no less than 6 listed with suffixes N,M,B,A,R,D although M can be forgotten about as it appears to be a replaced by B.

895 253 609 N = NG = 2.3 E / 5 cyl / 2309cc
895 253 609 M / 8G0 253 609 B = ABK = 2.0 E / 4 cyl / 1984cc
8G0 253 609 A = 1Z, AHU = 1.9TDI / 4 cyl / 1896cc
895 253 609 R = ACE = 2.0 E 16V / 4 cyl / 1984cc
8G0 253 609 D = ADR = 1.8 / 4 cyl / 1781cc

Looking to the middle ((2)), there are 5 (note, there's an 893 prefix and 8G0 prefix on first and third in the list)

893 253 409 D = NG
893 253 409 B = ABK
8G0 253 409 D = 1Z, AHU
893 253 409 P = ACE
8G0 253 409 F = ADR

Now looking at what joins them together ((2A))

893 253 139 A = NG 55mm
893 253 139 = ABK, 1Z, AHU, ADR 50mm
893 253 139 C = ACE 60mm

but looking at the other connector ((1))

357 253 141 A = NG, ADR 55mm
191 253 141 F = ABK, 1Z, AHU 50mm
893 253 139 B = ACE 60mm

It appears there are three sizes of pipe: 50, 55 & 60.

There's this https://www.audi-cabrio-club.info/forum ... ?tid=33071 which links to this https://www.audi-cabrio-club.info/forum ... ?tid=32492 and random Audi bloke on the German internet says a middle and rear from an NG will fit as a pair behind the cat section.

Who is your local "exhaust fabrication place"? I'd try another.
Very useful indeed thank you, nobody on the Audi Cabrio/Coupe Facebook page has got a clue.

My local place is Stainless Creations in Falkirk. If you look at their Facebook page you'll see what I mean. They only want top end modern cars or 'classics'. They can fuck off. Exactly why I take nothing to do with the car scene any more and just do my own thing.

As Father Dougal said "I'm just off to study the old diagram now".

I think the NG is just a tad larger bore than the ADR. Seems an awful lot of faff from the manufacturer's point of vehicle.

Anyway, there's a load of part numbers to cross ref. and keep you busy.

I've not got round to using them yet, but C&C at Hillington are supposed to be helpful.

Someone else has recommended them to me as well. The Mini has its MOT on Tuesday, if that goes not too bad then I can perhaps give them a call.

I found the blow on the Audis exhaust. You can just make out the hairline crack on the downpipe.

I should be able to clean that up, stabilise it with some weld and seal it with paste.

Apart from the join at the cat, the rest doesn't look too bad, certainly not any worse than the 16 plate Fiesta I was attending to today.

Does that even need paste if welded up?

EF outcome rather intention.

Just ignore me. You'll only get better at it by practicing. I'd weld away until I'd finished filling in all the holes I'd blown in it and then forget to budget for the replacement down the line.

Weld?

Sounds a bit fancy. I'd just slap some gun gum on that and call it a day.

That may explain why that Saab 9000's exhaust never quite sounded perfect...

That is 100% what will happen down to the last detail

It's basically cracking under its own weight. If I can stop that then some paste will sort the blow, hopefully!

Take heart in that I got another 3 years out my Yutaka / Honda exhaust rewelding it. The weld was still holding when I chucked it the other day, it was the silencer skin that was rotting from the inside out that finished it off.
