I did find another one for an Astra Diesel which seems to fit Kia as well. We shall see.

Having said that, how long does the wax material last inside it? I guess that one could be 25 years old. I'm just trying to resolve having paid double!

The top part of both types look to be interchangeable so I'll use the 'news' part on the old, smaller housing as the original is crumbling and had a chunk out of it.

Look at it this way. You're making progress. You've managed to find the correct part. Just need to work on honing the e-shopping skillz.

Finding parts can be a complete pain in the hole for modern stuff as much as classics. Take Peugeot for instance, if I want to get brake pads, I really need to know what I've actually got in my hand, as when I went to a motor factors many moons ago for some front ones for a 207 - even with a reg and vin - I was told there were three to choose from. Fully functional EPCs at the dealers will pin things down from the VIN, but a lot of online / pirate ones aren't able to phone home for the VIN info to be retrieved, which isn't helpful. Especially if it's near to a changeover point.

The other problem with a car of a certain age, is who has been "at it" before you. You know, the smart cunt that has fitted later parts to an early car, sometimes with questionable mods to make it fit. All fun and games.

I've probably paid double for a thermostat before, but I wanted a particular brand - Wahler - because they supplied Volvo, and they also did a 92C variant that nobody else seemed to.

These snippets from the Wahler thermostat catalogue shows the changeover engine number (Is yours 439605?) and cross references.

Looks like I should hone my e-shopping skillz too.

Aye I was told that there was a change of engine, I'll need to find where the number is on mine.

Someone changed the oil filter thread on it so a bigger filter could be fitted. I had an absolute war get one but I now know I need to search for Subaru Legacy Diesels. I also kept the box in the service history for the part number.

Volvo is also a goldmine for comedy levels of part variants fitted to one model. (Brake callipers/discs varying depending on if you went for 14" or 15" wheels + ABS/no ABS versions of both for example).

My 740s were/are both 1989 models too, handy as that was a transition year before the facelift came out leading to all sorts of weird anomalies...
