Well I thought I might as well start a thread about my work van of the last 5? Years.
This started life as a school minibus, however by the time I got it it had lost its seats and been used both as a builders van and caravan hauler, the previous owner was intending to convert it to a camper but fortunately didn't start.

Powered by the mighty* 2.0 pinto with 4 speed box it goes about as well as you might imagine with a raging 70ish bhp from the factory.
Being the minibus it has the fast 4.63 axle which means speeds like 65 or even 80 are momentarily achievable and cruising at 60 is not a one time only thing.

This engine is about buggered and is consuming about a pint of oil every 500 miles running about but much less on prolonged runs.

Today's task was to grease up the kingpins, Passenger side lower was a bugger and pretty dry as it took a while to pump through.

I remember this on AS, it's a proper van just as vans should be.

More pictures!!!!!

I've worked on very few Transits. I assume being a Ford loads of bits are available. Does it share parts with the Cortina or is it all unique.

If I remember things correctly that level of oil consumption is considered acceptable for a new vw engine, about 1/2 litre per 1,000 Kms or so.

They share a few parts with other fords but only minor things like wheel bearings and instruments, some panels etc are shared between the mk1/2 and A series trucks.

Parts availability is pretty bad considering just how many of these were built, loads of pattern parts are still being turned out in Turkey but the firm doesn't export :( there are a couple of specialists who are reasonable or if you want to pay way over the odds you can buy from the transit van club, which isn't a "club" at all but a lucrative profit making venture for its owner.

I think the oil consumption is still well within the spec given in the handbook for a new 80s vauxhall as well!!

This is the sort of Tranny I want to read about.

For an engine of this vintage 500 miles to a pint of oil is actually excellent.
