I had the leads the correct way. I may be an idiot but I'm certainly not stupid!

Sounds a bit odd to fail like that, most of the cheaper ones are only rated at 2 amps current but are fuse protected.

Buy a Fluke 101 from the 'bay.

Proper meter, robust and actually accurate.

Funds dont allow me to pay too much. That's why I was happy enough buying a 7 quid job that lasted 18 months but they had non so went to ebay. Cant warrant spending too much for a hobby and occasional use

It's a piece of chinese crap. I'd love to take it apart to investigate but they want me to return it for a refund. Interesting as I cannot print off a returns label

£40 for a proper one. I'd use the box those £7 ones come for testing in before the actual meter.

To be fair the 7 or 8 quid ones I buy from hardware store are fine for checking for power or continuity and alternator or battery test. I dont use them for a job daily. Just occasional use and for 18 months or so use they are fine. The only issues I've had are the screens go wonky. I've learnt my lesson buying cheap one off ebay though. I'd pay more if I used one more frequently but I dont so cant warrant it.
