Re: The van,now with added moped.

Post by bub2006 »

Right then, seeing as the van is behaving itself, admittedly though out of action till Thursday when the new windscreen is fitted i thought I'd add the scooter to this thread.
Its a 2016 lexmoto fmr 50. Reason behind a 50 is I take a cbt once and get full moped license so can carry pillions and no L plates as well as never need to do 1 again. Ideal for shop runs, taking boy 3 mile to school in warmer weather etc. Also I'm unsure how disability will affect riding so start small and see how we get on. Also son would like a moped when he's 16.
It was bought cheap from a friend who in turn bought it cheap from someone local,I know it was local as I fetched it in the escort van. Anyway, when I picked it up it would idle but not rev. Assumed stale fuel so drained tank, stripped and cleaned carb and tried it. Started up fine but was bogging at more than quarter to half throttle. Stripped and cleaned carb again but no dice.
I then fitted a brand new carb from friends stash. Very hard to start but when running ran ok albeit a little flat. 2 carbs,2 different symptoms. Right then.
I then swapped the auto choke unit from original carb to new carb and made jack shit difference. Swapped carbs back and this time put new choke unit on original carb. That made the scooter hard to start. Knackered choke unit. Yay.
Then today the fun starts again. Swapped original choke unit back onto original carb and get no fire at all.
Nipped to friends house and raided his stash again. Came home with a spark plug,5 different cdi units,3 inline fuel filters and 3 more carbs.
Tried new cdi. Dead cdi so marked as such and threw it in corner. Tried another cdi and it fired up great but was still bogging. Fitted new fuel filter and it started up. Took it down street and back and pulled ok until it started to falter again. Wouldnt rev nor idle.
This time I drained tank again, removed petcock and cleaned it and fitted new plug. No difference. Called it quits for today.
Just to summarise I have tweaked mixture on all carbs, checked for air leaks, checked jetting is same on all carbs and all carbs are pretty much the same bar 2 which have accelerator pumps. I have removed air filter and tried choking the air intake by hand too and no change. Thing can stay in corner till I can get to grips with whats wrong with the needy little shit. At least I have a nice little workshop at new house.

Could it be compression that's causing the issue?
ie. knackered engine?

Comoression seems good, valves aren't tight or loose either. I'd also expect same symptoms all the time too. Thats the baffling part, that the symptoms change. I've a suspicion original carb may have been fucked about with previously and its also possible the first new carb I had did have a casting fault but I can't see numerous carbs having issues. Only thing I haven't changed is fuel petcick which could gave a split diaphragm.

More moped shenanigans. Changed reg rec to no avail. Still being a cunt. Starts up fine but seems to bog out and die. Check stator and can't see any output on multimeter and it doesn't seem to be charging. Perhaps the stator has a failed coil or broken wire and spark isn't strong enough from battery alone.

Can you check it had the correct carb fitted when you got it. People like to chuck anything off wish etc on them and wonder why they don't run right...

Yes its the right carb. Its a gy6 engine used in many big names things as well as Chinese scooters. 19mm carb,80 main jet,35 pilot. Cant remember needle codes off top of my head but each of the 3 had the same, correct needle in it.

I can assure you that two's up on a restricted 50 is a very grim experience!
