Got millions here, because I buy 'em quarterly. Which reminds me that the Jizz one expired tonight. No worries, the guards don't seize unless it's more than two months out.

That and frugal 3-wheel motoring is rapidly going to cement a reputation as a tightwad.

They do but were the only option for those who couldn't stretch to a full year.

Quarterly discs in the UK disappeared around the time reflective plates came in?? (late 1960s)

Yes, they do cost more. Compare UK Vehicle Excise Duty with Irish Motor Tax

Take the 2005 Jizz CVT for example. Euro 4 engine and 139g CO2/km - Under UK Vehicle Excise Duty rates, Band E:

£150 - 12 months - any payment method
£82.50 - 6 months (half + 10%) non-direct debit
£78.75 - 6 months (half + 5%) direct debit
£13.13 - per month direct debit

Can be SORN'd for any reason, any time. Rebate for whole months unused (or DD stopped) minus any surcharge for split payment methods. Minimum 1 month remaining. 12 month discs only if annual rate is £50 or less.

Now despite it having a CO2/km figure, they didn't start taxing on emissions here until 2008. So I have to pay based on cc. Motor Tax for Private Car Standard 1301-1400cc

€385 - 12 months
€213 - 6 months (half + 11% and disregard cents)
€108 - 3 months (quarter + 13% and disregards cents)
€38.50 - arrears per month (10% of annual rate)

Here's the stinger. You can only make a SORD (minimum 3 months - maximum 12 months) after a Motor Tax disc expires. To get a rebate for whole calendar months unused it must be for one of the following 7 reasons (with paperwork to back it up):

1. Vehicle Stolen
2. Vehicle Scrapped / Destroyed
3. Vehicle Exported
4. Vehicle Not Used - The vehicle has not been in a public place at any time since the issue of the tax disc.
5. Vehicle not used because of Owner’s illness / injury
6. Vehicle unused because the Owner absent from the State
7. Vehicle Duty Error - The duty was paid / overpaid by mistake in the following circumstances

You can only apply for a motor tax refund at your local motor tax office. You will need to complete Form RF120, get it witnessed and stamped by a member of An Garda Siochána, and then send it to that office. You should contact them in advance to find out if any other supporting documentation is needed.

A minimum of 3 unexpired whole calendar months must be left on the disc when it is surrendered to the motor tax office.

(12 months discs only if annual rate less than €119)

So when Jizz 1 got crashed into, it was 2 months into a 12 month disc. As I kept the salvage I couldn't claim (2) or even under (4) because it had been on the road since issue of the disc. Basically I was reamed for €300. So given that it's such a pain in the hole to get a rebate, I pay the extra for quarterlies.

306 Cabriolet + Jaaag

UK VED >1549cc:
£270 - 12 months
£23.63 - per month direct debit

Irish Motor Tax:
Pug 1998cc - 1901-2000cc
€710 - 12 months
€394 - 6 months
€200 - 3 months
€71 - arrears per month

Jaaag 3239cc - 3,001 or more
€1809 - 12 months
€1,003 - 6 months
€511 - 3 months
€180.90 - arrears per month

Getting back to ancient tricycles, we do have a concession rate here for vehicles over 30 years old, Motorcycles €26 annual and all other vehicles over 30 years old €56.

A Reliant = motorcycle rates.

Here's one I prepared earlier.

When I got the galvanized chassis, I also got a galvanized front suspension arm. Trouble at the time was I made a complete cunt of my attempt(s) to get the taper pin out. (Could not work out which direction it tapered)

So when the last lot of work was carried out, I farmed the job out to a very helpful dealer that used to exist (Woodlawn Garage). The pin was removed, but replaced with an oversized taper hole/pin. The king pin was replaced and as were the bushes.

I need to think what I've done with the front hub and brake drum. It must be around somewhere.

Another job I had to farm out were the halfshafts.

I wanted to remove the hubs, but they are a taper fit and didn't want to budge. So I took them to one garage that succeeded in only fucking things up more. As they couldn't pop them off with hydraulic press, Terry Fuckwit decided for some reason to take an angle grinder to the stop collars. Anyone with half a brain would see that they weren't coming off the the other way as the inboard side of the shaft has a larger diameter.

I took it them to Woodlawn and he had a fight with getting them off, but succeeded and got his mate to machine up some replacement stop collars.

The rest of the axle is in the boot of the car, I'm sure I've got the (world's shortest) propshaft somewhere too.
