Re: Brand New Car
Only ever when I need them for work. Ignoring company cars when I worked for another company, I have only bought new cars through companies in my name. All my overseas cars were new (except one Pajero) and even the Mercedes outside my house now was a company purchase. But I made that decision quite well as the book depreciation out-did the market price depreciation quite nicely and I bought the car off the company. I’ll keep it for the foreseeable as it is reliable, not too expensive to maintain with specialists and is still a nice car after 160k miles. Let’s see how it is after 260k. All the other cars in my life have been old bangers and on paper ruinous! If I ever move / expand into more land therefore space for cars, I’ll start buying bangers again just for fun, and the huge amount of short journeys I seem to do nowadays. The Merc hasn’t had a decent journey for nearly 2 years now.

Re: Brand New Car
What's your annual mileage?
I probably do 10k in the van and about 5k in the cars.
The vam could probably be used for 99% of journeys. The boy has been known to travel in the back. We don't actually have a daily atm. Might be looking soon though depending on BJ.

Re: Brand New Car
I buy old cars, I buy new cars. It's my money, I have no dependents it's up to me how I spend or waste it.
I bought a new car last July, I did not need a new car, but liked the look of it so bought it. Despite not really going anywhere it has clocked up over 8000 miles now.
Could I have bought a "better" second hand car for the same or less money, undoubtedly, but I didn't want to.
Will I buy another new car, probably, assuming I see something I want, where I'm prepared to pay the price. Will I buy another old car, probably, same answer as above.

Re: Brand New Car
Probably a lot less than a 3 series! Also plenty of DIY guides online as the Americans are much more likely to repair their own cars themselves.
For diagnostics on the earlier ones, if you plug in a Volvo scan tool into the OBD and say it's a S60, you can pretty much do everything you need.

Re: Brand New Car
Bought a couple new vehicles here, but the depreciation isn't so cripplingly bad as is there.
Wife used to do about 80-100k/yr in her trucks and didn't want to be buying in on other people's miles or problems.
As a business model it made sense, keep the vehicle 3 years and trade in.
Bought the Jeep new, the Challenger second hand (2nd owner, never raced or rallied), last 2 pickup trucks were new also.

Re: Brand New Car
Nope don't see one.
Newest at the time of purchase has been an 8 year old Jizz. It's also still the youngest I've had being from 2006.
It's replacement is identical (bar hole in the roof) and from 2005.
Oldest at time of purchase was my 1972 DAF 44 estate that was 38 yr old. Oldest overall was a 1964 Austin 1100.
I have all the cars I need for the foreseeable.
I've had two new motorcycles though in the past, but they were for work. A 1996 Kawasaki GPZ305 (stop laughing at the back) and a 2002 Suzuki SV650.
I sacked the GPZ off after 6 months / 20k miles for a 6 yr old GT550 and liquidated the SV after 18 months and 30k miles (27k done in the first 9 months).
36k used to be a low mileage year, 60k more usual. Best I can do these days is around 12k.

Re: Brand New Car
Several company appliances and the former Mrs B had several that I paid for.
I’m currently considering a new Dacia for France as the used stuff is all overpriced shit with 3-400k on.
Buying a used car here is like turfing your life savings into a Ponzi scheme.
Less annoying tag line.

Just when I thought I was out they dragged me back in.

Re: Brand New Car
I've had 3 cars on motability as well as a few courtesy cars. Heres a bit of a run down.
Skoda Octavia 1.4 tsi FM67 LGZ
Nice car if a bit basic and scratchy inside by modern standards. Touch screen buttons were hopeless though. Nice auto box when it was working. Developed a drain on battery at a few month old and was never right since then. Gearbox went a bit jumpy, kept flashing up with starting fault. Certainly felt a lot quicker than its quoted 150bhp too. Traded in early because of its issues.
Nissan qashqai 1.5dci FH18 OKB
Not that great. Thirsty, not enough power to pull itself out of harms way. Quite small inside considering its large exterior. ECU suffered meltdown on the a38 and Nissan couldnt fix it.
Hyundai ioniq hybrid FA19 BDU
Nice to drive but problematic from 2 weeks old. On way to glossop it lost its coolant due to a heater hose not clipped in and it had an overheating fault since then. Was written off in the storms we had last year but I've just looked it up and it was for sale in august. It had severe damage to engine, box, chassis rail and body panels as well as fire brigade destroyed the wiring.
Mini countryman 1.5 3 pot turbo FL69 UNS
This is our current steed. Owned since Feb of last year and has done just under 7k to date. Been absolutely faultless. Nice smooth 7 speed auto box and goes better than a 3 pot in a car weighing 1.6t has any right to. Average around 38 mpg so not great but for its size I wont complain. spacious boot and comfy interior.
I've had a few courtesy cars as well when the above have broken. Some ok some not so good. Ford focus titanium auto. 1.0 3 cylinder 125 bhp. Couldnt decide what gear it wanted and was very thirsty. Barely managed 30mpg. Citroen spacetourer 1.2 130bhp 3 cylinder auto. Nice and comfy. Box was ok if a little dim witted. Not bad economy wise. Lastly was another octavia but this was an estate in 1.0 115bhp form. Felt underpowered when loaded for a holiday. Not great on fuel as it needed to be revved to move.

Re: Brand New Car
I very nearly ended up with a new Mustang GT 5.0 when they were on offer for £300 pcm a few years back. Probably the only car that I would get brand new. However I didn't as I knew I'd be disappointed with the performance. Over 400 bhp but nowhere to use anywhere near that in the UK.

Re: Brand New Car
It varies project to project. If I’m overseas, practically nothing (leaving aside China where we would drive 40 hours non-stop driver rotating just to get to customer site), and when I was in London, a few thousand a year as no sane person would fancy the 90 minute 4 mile journey to Peckham Morrissons too often, but there were a few years of epic regular paneuropean jaunts and the Scotland job put nearly 7k a month onto it. During this last year I have probably done less than 1k all in. Tesco fuel clubcard must think I have pegged it.paulplom wrote: ↑Thu Feb 18, 2021 4:35 pm What's your annual mileage?

I had a colleague who was a permie at the Scotland job but he was visiting site from Cheshire once a week and when made up to company car status he was pouring over Mustang 5.0 brochures. We did a little POD excel work one morning and he soon realised that a 420d coupe was by far the better bet financially. Company cars can be ruinously expensive if you’re not careful. If you’re already independently wealthy then fine, live a little, but if you are in your 30s and haven’t yet paid off the mortgage, kids haven’t yet turned on the cash tap, then there are better ways of using your income.
