Brand New Car

Walking the hound and seeing all the new cars passing by, it occured to me I will probably never have a new car.

I've had 3 in my lifetime, all company cars so not really mine although they were for my sole use at the time -

1988 Ford Fiesta XR2 - F691 XOF
1989 Citroen BX 19 GTi - G472 XLR
1990 Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 GL -

That's it. Never paid for a new car with my own money and really really unlikely to now although until the double whammy of Kung Flu and IR35 I was planning on my company leasing an electric car of some kind.
That's not going to happen.

Anyone see a brand new car in their future?

I certainly can't see having one myself. 1900 quid is the most I've ever spent on a car in over 25 years of driving. In fact I've only ever spent over a grand twice and one of those cars is one I have at the mo. My old man's just bought a £100 shitter so he doesn't have to drive his wife's nearly new car as he's scared of damaging it.

Personally I'd rather spend the money lost in depreciation on something else, like a roof over my head and sacking the mortgage off earlier. I paid mine off a few years back and saved a fortune by paying it off quicker than 25/30/35 years.

Yesterday after trying to make sense of Domestic Management’s and my car needs and me sulking over spending £500 last week on a car I haven’t had any work or need for since last April.
I came to the conclusion a brand new Nissan Leaf on PCP and a late Mercedes CLK 500 convertible are what we need, with me driving whatever £2/300 car I happen to Hoover up off The Beige.

The only new car we’ve ever bought was a Fiat 500 in the 2009 Scrappage scheme , it’s still here and probably the tattiest Fiat 500 in existence, has been totally reliable and only needed a rear brake cylinder and a couple of door handles in 12 years.

Oh, today I’m not feeling the PCP Leaf and looking at pick up trucks- I have no idea why.

The only way I'd ever get a brand new car was with a massive lottery win & a visit to Aston Martin, even then I think I'd prefer some of the older models.

But what about the car?

Not at all likely to buy new, but one can never predict a descent into insanity.
I've been involved in purchasing 3 new vehicles in my life, all for business use when I foolishly thought that I by buying new I'd be relieved of maintenance.
The first was a nice Renault 4 van on which I paid extra for a pre-delivery rust prevention to be carried out. It was scrapped 6 years later, looking perfect externally but with the floor completely rotted beneath the treatment.
Next was an '89 Fiorino diesel which had some serious teething problems- the top engine mount hadn't been tightened at the factory and on its first journey it came off allowing the engine to drop. The van was recovered immediately (on a Sunday night) by the dealer who repaired the damage effectively and provided us with a very nice127 van in the interim.
The Fiorino's oil light would flicker on surprisingly gentle bends and this was traced to a faulty pick up pipe. Once fixed the van went on to give years of service, always fully laden, and gave no more trouble. 3rd and final new motor was a 305 van, I couldn't fault it, but a change of circumstances meant it only stayed a couple of years and though I sold it privately the huge loss convinced me never to buy new again.

Nearly did it once. I had some redundancy money and seriously considered a new Mini Cooper before they stopped making them. Luckily sense prevailed and I used the money getting the fuck out of a failed relationship and starting my life again. It was the one and only time I ever got that far down the new car route.

Never had a new car and can't really see it happening.
I bought a new fiat ducato in 2006 which I kept till 2012 when I wrote it off into the back of a shitty astra.
I cherished that van and looked after it like a baby. All for nothing.

Like Cros I, too, have a brand new Renner 4 story. As I tend to waffle I'll put it up on my Ramblings thread on the porno channel next door......
