There is something to be said for the basic models with minimal trim. The Allegro is very good in that respect as it doesn't have any fragile trim, but they made a special metal dashboard and had different interior trim for the basic DL, just to remind you about choosing the cheapest option.
These wraparound screens are much easier to fit than ordinary screens. With an assistant its a 20 minute job.

With painting complete, I cracked open the wob. Not just any old wob, you understand, but Posh Wob.

And smoothed over the depressions caused by corrosion. I expected getting the stainless trim out of the old rubber to be a difficult job, but after a little study I just peeled the old rubber away, only some tearing apart and getting stuck in the groove. And all the trim stayed in one piece - hopefully I can replace it in one piece!

Yeah I think it was time for a replacement rubber.

I ordered another tube of Screenseal just to be on the safe side, although I have about half a tube left the last thing I want is to run out when I have a deadline of Friday.
Next jobs are to stick the headlining back in place, fit the stainless trim to the new rubber, then put the glass in and replace the screen.

Not condemning the usage at all but I love the strapline on that wob...."replacing metal with metal. What can be more permanent than that?"

Whatever happened to "Isopon - Stronger Than Steel?!"

A quarter of a way through the 21st century and we are still repairing old Rootesmobiles out of a tin. I really do genuinely take a good deal of pleasure from that. I used some on my Minor doors not long ago, too!

It's been a race against the clock and I'm almost there. Headlining clamped in place for the glue to set, both sides done.

Good old wob, done a good job. Painted over again with Hammerite.

Then for the struggle. It took hours to fit the trim and it still needs further work. To give you who haven't seen this car an idea of its size, the rubber would not go lengthways into the Aggy. Yeah yeah, I know its completely the wrong camera angle to show how much is sticking out, but take my word for it as a good 7 inches.

As I said before, its 5% removing and fitting the screen and 95% horribleness. Fitting the rubber around the glass was a PITA, with the sealant all over the place, and as the rubber tightened it kept coming off at the other side I just put on. It was a terrible job. Anyway this is what grandads are for, as I asked him to come and help me on this two-person job. Having an extra pair of hands, if only to hold the screen to stop it falling on the ground, was vital. We managed to do it and then fitted the screen back into the car. Unfortunately the fit is quite poor in places, and no amount of coercion tapping with rubber mallets improves matters.

But, it is a reproduction part and that is generally what happens with them. Outside on the other side of the car the very bottom corner of the rubber lip just doesn't quite extend over to the main body, hopefully with a bit more time spent on it I can sort it out. I also have to secure the last few inches of top trim which came out the groove, and replace all 4 corner pieces. And clean up the mess from the sealant. And wash the area. All before tomorrow, and I'm at work. I knew I should've booked today off.

But, Gaydon it is tomorrow.

One would hope the new seals seal in light of the Humber being submarined to Gaydon today.
