Yes indeed, hence the change to a blue lens. In older red ones tat, dimming is effected by various means, or not at all as you found out. The MO had a resistance-wound lamp unit, whilst the Humber's is full brightness but shielded to allow only a pin-head amount of light out.

If you can't tell you're on full beam at night then you shouldn't be driving. Cars used to be built with this in mind.

The Cowley has a similarly faint high beam indicator. It just reminds you, like a gently coughing butler, that Sir has currently selected High Beam. It is also coloured red, just like the only other warning light - that for a live ignition circuit. Of course, Sir knows when he has the ignition on and when he has main beam switched - no need for colour coding.

The Doloshite has the same "I can't believe it's a light" high beam warning lamp. Only ever visible if it's pitch black, although at least isn't dazzling like most moderns...

The worst I've encountered was in a Vauxhall Vivaro which required me to drive with a hand over the light so I could actually see anything other than a supernova of blue.

The reason it drew my attention is because of the facility to flash the main beams. I have to pull the column stalk toward me, and then a little further as resistance is felt, to make the circuit. With a dim tell-tale it is not always readily apparent if I pulled the stalk far enough if I flash the mains in daylight, and also lends weight to SiC's theory of the switch assembly being a modern wank replacement.
Of course the older cars are not troubled by this because they do not have the facility to flash the main beams. But on the ones I modified to do so, the tell-tale leaves me in no doubt.

In what resembles a scene from a Hitchcock movie, there was no mistaking the main beams being 'on' in my old shite station wagon.

If it weren't for the control light you'd have never guessed the headlights were on at all.

A simple fault - bad connection in the wiring.

I ordered a few parts to sort the easy stuff, adding value to the car for resale. This is the wrong window winder handle.

I ordered a new one from Moss. They are BL parts bin, along with the door pull handles. The Aggy uses the very same of both.
I am getting handy with the wob now, it really is excellent stuff for jobs like this.

Now, it just happens that Talbot Alpine White is a great match for this MG. Can you honestly tell the difference?

More liberal use of wob is planned for the areas where the paint has gone like this. God knows what caused this, most likely poor preparation - much of the panels were replaced. The nearside A-post and door suffer too.

I fitted the new window winder handle but took the door card off first to ascertain why the winder didn't wind.

Fuck. I tried tapping the glass back in the channel with the old striking implement to no avail. It's too corroded and gone. If it's a major expense to renew then it can be the next owner's problem. It looks like a ball ache to replace. Driver's side window is still very hard to wind down and up despite liberal application of lubricant.
