I am getting cynical in my old age and have a trader who keeps bringing shit to me that he has bought at auction thinking it is an easy fix. Invariably someone has already done all the easy things and given up when it looks like it will get expensive. My latest Clio is a good example it failed the mot on emissions as well as a few other bits, they fixed the other bits and tried to sort the emissions with the easy options. In the end it was a burnt valve but they gave up and flogged it when they started to suspect that. Again they just pleaded ignorant of what the fault was. That Mini does look reasonable but I suspect he is a bit of a pretend dealer.
Yeah re-reading the advert I can see what you mean. Previous owner history stacks up to what the listing says. But I don't think a trader shows up on that through. I suspect it'll end up going around the 2k sort of price point. There are MOT'd ones going for twice that, but of course you can easily spend that in parts to get that to MOT level if there is hidden problems.

It is local-ish so I could go see, but I can't commit until I've sold the BMW. The problem then is if I have cash in my pocket, I tend to get too excited and make rash decisions.

Rash decisions like agreeing to buy that Corvette before it even gets on the boat - that's what you should be aiming for

I don't have the plumbs yet or even the facilities to handle such a motor vehicle. Maybe in the future when I've done a the common British stuff and got bored.

You can't get simpler than an A series. I must have had 30 or 40 in various guises and never had a terminal one. I doubt it's anything serious as they can take horrendous abuse. The 'box on the other hand..

Even then I wish the box on this BMW was as easy to remove and fix as an A-Series box. This definitely crunches into 1st unless you engage it when stationary. Really irritating and the only real issue that I know of on the car. Thankfully, as the engine has a fair bit of low down torque, you can easily pull off in 2nd if you are still rolling.

I imagine many years of an elderly man forcing it into first gear when going quite fast but approaching a stop has done this. My wife does it on our cars, despite me telling her not to. Coming up to a roundabout at ~20mph still and changing down the ratios in turn, she'll engage first. Because modern box it doesn't complain but I can't imagine it's doing the internals much good.

I've got my best mate who I've not seen in person for over a year coming around today. I know he'll want a go in it!

Fuck, the 520i box is about as easy to remove as any. It’s a Getrag 240, £100 secondhand.

A rotten, non running Mini for £2000. Sounds sweet.

Was Getrag a division of ZF back in 1985? The box has the ZF logo on the side of it.

Only reason I'd change the box is to enhance its saleability. Perfectly fine to drive around it by only use first gear when stationary. Pulling off when rolling is smoother in 2nd too.
