I have to say that the 525E I briefly had as a company car in either 83 or 84 I considered to be shit at the time. Being in my late 20s and liking revving to the red line though I'm not certain that I was part of the target market. Now I've grown up I imagine I'd have a different opinion. It was better than the Sierra 2.3 Ghia that followed it but so would virtually everything else be.

You need 20 grand to get a good 6 Series. Lots of 'tidy' ones (i.e money pits) for less and even 20 grand ones can be shite.
The last one I bought was in 1996, the ex Tom Jones 1984 A reg auto in Alpine white with blue leather. It was absolutely mint, recent new front wings and four new Avon Turbospeeds. I paid about £3000 at Blackbushe Auctions. I moved it on after a fortnight for £4000 and it went to Jersey.

The red 525e is worth £3000. It wants a grand spending on new wings or just repair the existing ones as they don't look fucked. £250 for a good wheel job and you will be putting money into the suspension and brakes. All UK cars are autos, a pity as the manual was so much better. I converted two to 5 speed manual and they were transformed.

The E34 that replaced it was a much, much better car though and prettier as well. A good one is an absolutely lovely thing and they drive as well as anything made now. The handling and ride are sublime. These are now creeping up on the E28 in value as folk cotton on.

Personally a manual 520i with its higher revs is a much more desirable powertrain combination than the diesel revving like 525e on a slush. I mean I'd prefer if it was a 528i but they're out of my mediocre budget.

Much as I say it everytime and it never happens. With this E28, I want to keep my spend low on it.

It's cool that it's a local Bristol car but at the same time it is a bit tatty. Seat bolster on the drivers side is split (can you get fabric for it?), a few MOT welded patch plates, split dash top, pitted bumpers and scruffy paint with lacquer crazing.

Maybe it would look better if I sanded it back and splash some tractor enamel in Ford blue.

That's nice. Shame it's an auto though.
In the UK market, the 525e only had the slush box.
In other markets, there was also the 325e using the same set up and in manual and auto options.

I had a B plate 525e and it used to return over 33mpg - not bad for a six pot 2.7 litre in the day.

None. I haven't driven a 524d or 524td too, but I also know I don't want one of those either.

If I remember correctly it was mainly sold with an emphasis on fuel economy. I vaguely remember that it was pretty good cruising up and down the A1 but rolled like hell on anything twistier.
