Re: Rover P4
Torque is related to revs as we all know. Yes there is less low down grunt but a P4 isn't pulling stumps out or driving up muddy hillsides through a transfer box. Without different gearing, that extra low down torque will be pretty much wasted. Then there is the modern day hassle of DVLA with any such modifications.
I'd much rather do something more productive like buy a car that needs TLC and get it back on the road.

Re: Rover P4
If you were going to daily it and fuel costs were a concern then I would go LPG if you have a local supplier. Diesel conversions are ok if it's what you want or were done when diesel was cheap.
The period modification would have involved a Perkins no doubt.
I remember my uncle inheriting one of these and it coming up to my dad to get it it's very final MOT to transfer the plate which had been in his family since it was first allocated - PDV 1, the Rover still had it's card log book as well as a newer one and they had simply crossed out the original Rover number and written the new one on.

Re: Rover P4
LPG is the way to go definitely if you've a local filling station. When I used to go regularly to France finding log was no issue. Over here they're all closing down. So make sure you keep an original fuel tank in.

Re: Rover P4
As an idea:
Rover P4's aren't valuable. Why not break free from the 'but it's cheap' mentality for once and pay decent money for a solid six cylinder example that's on the road, working and needs a bit of cosmetic work as opposed to burying yourself in another rusted out stretcher case? Rover 60's are worth fuck all as everyone - quite rightly - wants a proper one.
Real value is found in good cars, not scrap.

It's not scrap, it's quality used spares and in this case quality used Reliant door handles. The Reverend Bluejeans wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 6:17 pm Real value is found in good cars, not scrap.

Re: Rover P4
Doors, bonnet and boot are aluminium, substantial steel chassis, very comfortable ride and very quiet on the move.
Many years back having been offered an 80 at not much above scrap money, I toyed with the idea of converting it to 4 wheel drive, using Land Rover series 3 running gear, but bought a Range Rover instead.

Re: Rover P4
Are you after some of these door handles by any chance Eddie ? I think I have a pair as they are the same as Jensen 541. I also have a number plate light somewhere, which were also Rover P4Eddie Honda wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 6:32 pmIt's not scrap, it's quality used spares and in this case quality used Reliant door handles. The Reverend Bluejeans wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 6:17 pm Real value is found in good cars, not scrap.

Re: Rover P4
Waiting for some more pictures from Minimad and also payment details. Given his current circumstances, I imagine he's pretty busy so I'm not going to pester too much.
Plus it gives me a chance to clear the drive. Need to remove the back axle on the Dolomite, cut the rear wings and windscreen surround out. Then going to call the scrap man to see if they'll just come out and clear it off my drive. Even if I don't get paid for the shell, after six months of a parts car on the drive, I'll be glad when it's gone.
This is sensible advice and it of course is what I should be doing. I have been keeping an eye out for exactly that intention. But nothing has come up that really meets that. The Reverend Bluejeans wrote: ↑Tue Feb 14, 2023 6:17 pm As an idea:

E.g. keeping an eye on the P4 mart:
https://www.roverp4dg.org.uk/index.php/p4-mart-for-sale
£2500 is wanted for this shed.
£5k for this needing bodywork
Elsewhere it has been £6k to £10k shiny stuff. Still want a Spitfire and that has/was my main focus.
The P4 I'm hopefully getting is basically scrap value (probably below it tbh) and then shipping costs on top. For that I'm getting something that has (hopefully) had the worst and biggest bits done, has been used regularly in the last decade and the engine was run last year or so.
Yes there is work and I'd rather not be doing bodywork. I'm waiting for the photos to confirm but I'm hoping a few weekends work on the body and it'll be done. Weather is improving and days are getting longer, so it should be pleasant doing a few patches on the drive.
I just need to concentrate on making it roadworthy rather than immaculate. At least its body on frame too.
Should be a good bit of fun either way.
