1979 Trouble Spitfire

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Some really nice stuff there. The K8 is particularly gorgeous and rocking horse rare.
Re. The bodges to the Spitfire. I’ve seen far worse over the years. This one doesn’t look that bad really.
I think what the Squire says is true and the bodgery on these popular sports cars is for two reasons:
Firstly, they are popular cars with people entering classic ownership for the first time, who fancy a small open topper with good spares availability. These people generally won’t know a thing about old cars but some will be keen to tinker. Hence the bodges.
Secondly, they are always in demand and probably attract the Billy Bodger types, who watch too much Wheeler Dealers and stuff them with filler and give them a fresh coat of paint, with the intention of flogging them come Spring and making a fat profit.

Any car that was vaguely sporting was got at by lads, especially I'd say late 70s early 80s. The addition of electronic ignition modules, spotlights, stereos and the like would have proved irresistible to any hot blooded young chap. The 124 coupe I owned had more dodgy wiring than Steve Austin...

This one really isn't too bad. Helps that the last owner sorted most of the bodges. He's used to Series Land Rovers and they're even more prone to being bodged. Tbh all classics at the end of the market are being prone to bodges. You only have to look at somewhere like the Morris Minor Facebook page for the many past and present bodges.

The biggest issue with automotive wiring is people buying these kits.

These cheap piler type crimpers are just shit. They bend about, poorly made and never put enough leverage to make a good crimp. The only cheap crimpers that are worth it are the ratchet type, unless you go for super expensive (£200+) plier types. Even worse are those too lazy to use them and use terminal blocks or even worse, wrap wires together.

Flakey underseal paint Spitfire is back for sale with another seller. Presumably thought it was an easy project to flip. Given it was up for £2k, it's still a profit for him in this if he gets anywhere near this.
