Yes, mine had twin sunroofs, A/C, CD multiplayer and best of all, everything worked!

Except for the rear wiper which had a mind of its own, pull the stalk and nothing would happen, three days later, the wiper would come on!

That was to do with a microswitch on the glass. The upp glass could be opened independent of the boot,handy for longer loads. I swapped ours over.

Loving the Golf, in white that’s got to be the ultimate Q-Car. One of my brother’s wrote his wife’s ( blue ) one off at Christmas. He spent 4 months looking for something as fast and practical, even when he added money to the insurance payout, looked at Macans, RS Audis , AMGs etc etc ended up with an another identical Golf. Reckons until he can afford an M3 Touring there’s nothing else and even that has got a smaller boot.

What type of Golf is that?

It’s a Golf R , which even taking into account the modern 600+ bhp things I sometimes drive is still the fastest ground coverer I’ve ever driven . Don’t think the estates are any slower, never actually driven my brother’s one, it was certainly going well when he put it into a field.
This is his latest, not quite as stealthy as a white one.

It wasn't too many years ago that the sporting models could be seen a mile off compared to lower specs but nowadays there isn't much in it which is no bad thing.
I had a Skoda Octavia tsi a few years ago. 1.4 150 bhp but certainly felt alot quicker. Only an SE trim so no big alloys,no satnav,basic seats and nothing externally like low profile tyres or spoiler. It was white too so just looked bland but it got a shift on. The dsg box was great and was quicker than a 1.4 had any right to be.

My nephew and his mate built a MkI Golf Gti with a VR32 motor in it. It took them months, because they wanted to keep it looking as a MkI should.

It went like fuck, and didn't handle that badly.

Ten years ago: I can't remember, might have been an out of sorts Maestro VDP with the talking dashboard. Possibly an ex-British Gas Berlingo but that wouldn't have ever been photographed. Plus the A99.

Is it just me that's never had a problem shifting gears in a classic 900 manual? The internet and contemporary road tests are awash with people slagging them off.

Same, never had a problem with it. I've stirred far worse boxes.

Still the fastest car I've ever driven. It was superb for overtaking and swallowing all my gear for work. Slightly harsh ride (standard, rather than the adjustable dampers on it), but I loved it. Was always slightly nervous about having it as it was around the time loads of them were getting stolen of driveways.

If I was proper rich I’d have a perfect Ro80 but it’s not the sort of car that is useable as a 50 year old wreck. Especially with a Ford V4 fitted.
I’d have a V4 Transit however…

My phone just through this up as a memory from 10 years ago. That Gaylander was a really good car, we had a 300C, CLK cab and only 2 kids driving then both had MX5s.
