Warren's next side hustle adventure

Post by Warren t claim »

A friend who's currently banned from driving wants to get into the buying and selling of cars plus snapping up cheap non runners to strip and weigh in.

I now "own" a 2004 Transit 3.5t recovery truck and tomorrow a trader's policy starts in my name. Both of these have cost me the princely sum of zero Pounds and zero Pence.

I suppose my first question is what's the largest vehicle that I can legally carry on the back of a 3.5t Transit without featuring in Eddie honda's CBW thread?

Has the truck got an unladen weight on a plate somewhere? Capacity would be 3500 minus that.
Also how do people get reasonable traders policies? I’d love to do something similar but always get stratospheric quotes

£3100 pa with Tradex who'll happily accept my 4 years NCB that's currently dormant as the taxi insurance firm I use won't accept it.

How many groups are there now? I still think of group 20 as supercars.

I still remember insuring an XR3i as a Group 5 car back in 1992.

My 4.0 ton gross Transit Smiley weighed 2.3 ton unladen, all alloy body and ramps, husky winch and about quarter tank of fuel.
Then add on me, about 14 stone and the weight of any other equipment.
So a steel body 3.5 ton is close to the limit with say an old Astra size car on it.
Usually you can get away a warning at about 5 per cent over weight.

Not much legally, put your recovery on the bridge and get the weight with you aboard and a decent amount of fuel, you'll probably be around 2000- 2200kg range depending on the build. So anything weighing less than 1500kg not sure but I think a modern mini is more than that.

A friend who did this professionally used to trailer most stuff as depending on your Transit you can legally shift upto 3500kg on the trailer, plus a Robin on the back
