One Scandinavian ferry operator won't carry any EV, and DFDS will not carry any damaged/salvage examples. Just one of those fucking things catches fire and you've probably lost a ferry.

It's definitely going to become more of an issue, insurance companies are becoming more risk averse already. The converts are currently deaf to it tho.

That's ok though, as the obvious plan to ban you from charging them once enough are sold. That way the plebs can't travel and no laws required.

Good thinking. A bit like when they told everyone to buy diesel because petrol was the devil then diesel was the devil again?
You'd think it was an underhand, corrupt ploy by the car manufacturers and government to sell more cars.

Yes, because they could get that organised.

The answer is much more dull. The road to Hell is paved with good intent.

When lithium ion batteries combust a by product is oxygen so very hard to extinguish. Apparently the only way is to bring the temperature of the whole thing down to a point where it no longer burns…..hence dropping it in lots of water.
Not sure about automotive but one solution in the fork truck world is to put the cells in a controlled box…..this box can contain the fire for an hour. So the call comes into our service desk and you ask when they noticed the fire……15mins they say…..and it takes 30mins to get there. Sorry caller….you are on your own…..suggest you move the truck to the far corner of your yard and run away. As long as you are sure about the 15mins thing…..

I load of the big insurance companies threw a few million quid into researching the best way to put out ev fires. The culmination of the research was - Just let the bastards burn themselves out!

You wouldn't have anything to do with LPG forklifts would you? I'm trying to acquire an LPG refueling skid unit.

Battery warning over double bin lorry fire

It said across the country 48% of all waste fires were being caused by lithium-ion batteries.

Mr Boyd, community risk manager for the service, said: "We have seen an increase in fires involving batteries in refuse lorries over recent months.

In December 2022, The Environmental Services Association said lithium battery fires were costing fire services and waste operators some £158m a year. It said 700 fires were caused every year by the batteries being thrown out.

It seems even the small versions are causing an uptick in problems? Plenty more in the links at the bottom of the page too.

Fake News as the EV Fanbois would claim (as would POD although he behaves like someone has dropped a large lead acid battery on his head from a great height).
