Looking at a car today, taking my 2cv specialist friend mechanic friend with me, but it's come up on a check as a Cat C write off with [a big] odometer discrepancy (coinciding with a gap of a year in the MOT history - no MOT 2022).

Should I let it worry me?

My own 2cv was written off back in 2003 and we bought it back for repair iirc, never let that worry me but obviously I knew the history.

Depends what history is with it. If you're happy it was rebuilt right then as long as it's good value I'd go for it.
I'd assume as these run lawnmower engines then they'd rebuild the engine during any resto so probably reset the clock then?

Re. The Speedo, it's a recent change, probably just broke and a replacement bunged in.

The loss was 2008... 2cv still considered worthless old crap by insurance companies back then, so even smallish repairs written off?

Usually an insurance cat will drop the value of the car so it wants to be priced accordingly. However it was so long ago it wouldn't really make much difference now. Just have it checked carefully to make sure if it had chassis work it was done properly. CAT C was for pretty much everything repairable a bit like CAT S now. CAT D was very light damage so a C would of been a bit more than a few bolt on bits. Might be worth checking with your insurance company that they will insure a previously written off car. I have never had a problem but have heard some people having trouble insuring write offs.

It's on a replacement chassis so fingers crossed on that.

My Boxster is Cat D. My last Civic was Cat N after someone rear ended me. Austin 1100 was a Cat D (I think ? Might have been C) and on classic insurance with Hagerty. All never had problems insuring. No insurer batted an eye lid or questioned further.

If this is a 2CV then I imagine it becomes a Cat C or Cat S very quickly given the flimsy construction.

I wouldn't be worried if it drives true, straight and good condition. Does mean it'll have been restored at some point too! However it will never be worth top money and will need to be priced accordingly as panhard65 says. Likewise it'll always be a pia when you come to sell on as people shy away from Cat marked cars. Hence value is always less.

I'd ask the seller about the speedo and MoT gap.
How they respond should be useful info.

A friend’s Boxster was recently written off and his insurance company reduced the settlement figure by 20% because it was a write off 10 years ago , he was unaware of this and wasn’t that bothered as they still paid more than he had 3 years ago.
