I struggled getting mine to drive more than 30 miles without breaking down so balls of steel driving it home from Sweden.

Weird. They have a reputation of indestructibility.
Our FTP was entirely self inflicted, other than that it ran like a lawnmower all the way.

Mine was unreliable due to the muppets that were supposed to of cleaned the fuel tank out when they repaired it. It kept on blocking fuel filters which was not good. Mine was also a major lash up having disc brakes on the front which I found could accept mercedes calipers with the addition of 5mm wheel spacers. The correct calipers were stupid money. I think the poor modifications and previous work spoilt mine as I never really trusted it again.

It was a 1000. It came from Belgium via ex rally driver in Ireland. He was a really nice bloke but I should of left it well alone. I think the only bit of '57 DKW was the paperwork everything else was AU 1000

So many questions. How did you get ADAC cover? Did you hit any ‘ legal’ difficulties - esp in Sweden?
Do they not have an ANPR equivalent- or did you chance your arm? Travel at night…..

How was the journey out- complicated/ expensive or a piece of piss? Did you take tools - how did you get them through the airport?

Sadly my wife no longer ‘ plays ball’ , our ADHD ( read as boneidle) youngest’s predilection with ‘ safety’ has rubbed off-& she’ll no longer ‘ take a risk’. So I’d be doing this alone.

No ADAC cover, in fact, none whatsoever, because covers are for wussies.
We 'ordered' the ADAC online, so the call was entirely free of charge. Germany is a very hospitable country, something you tend to forget when you live in the UK for extended periods of time.

I'm not aware that Sweden employs UK level Gestapo methods, I think they were last seen in Germany ca 1938. The UK subsequently destroyed it, allegedly because of them. The car was registered in SO's name and insured.

The journey out involved air travel from Manchester, so it was sheer horror end to end, 13 hours delayed and also otherwise just shit.
Public transport just sucks the chrome off a tow bar ball, avoid like the clap you inevitably pick up using it.

I did not carry any tools, since air travel does not permit such. A basic set and the obligatory safety equipment such as a blanket was obtained at a Biltema, but remained unused the entire trip.

Wifeunit saw it as a belated honeymoon, it was the first trip since we got together without any offsprings in tow. We are still married as of today.

We flew out on a Saturday and returned on a Wednesday evening, with a stopover in Katrineholm to visit SO and his family and shoppage for above mentioned provisions. Driving the car long distances is much more pleasant than anticipated. It's also faster than expected. However, you are travelling in a 1957 time capsule, with 1957 progress, 1957 brakes and 1957 telephone reception.

As I said, it's now been in a garage since shortly after we returned and I made some fire under the arse of its proprietor today. I want it back!
I have also ordered quite a few parts I'd like to install, like new pedal rubbers, gear lever anti rattle gaiter, orange indicator lenses, etc, before they dry rot in the house, ffs. You get most parts for them from Argentina, Brazil and South Africa nowadays, where they still have a following big enough to warrant the manufacture of repop bits.

It's a 1000 clear as a whistle. 1957 has suicide doors and no panoramic windscreen.

Respect for what?
The wifeunit and I had a conversation while on the road and came to the conclusion that we did nothing else than what people in 1957 did, except for all that safety bollox they have put in place since, like SOS phones every km throughout Yeerup, mobile phones, seatbelts and all such uncool rot.
You can't even smoke on planes anymore, for crying out loud.
