Started cleaning stuff up tonight.
Rods are the right way round this time.
The bores have been machined too heavily and are gonna have piston slap. The rings are well out of gap spec.
Finally, why do you RTV a piece of scrap metal over a 50¢ freeze plug that's rusted out? It's even a standard size.

Had it been overbored for the pistons? Would it be easier/ better to get the next oversize set or another block and have it bored to the correct size?

From what I can tell, this block was +0.040" and worn out when they got it. So they just randomly honed the hell out of the bores and opened them way up, in a couple pots probably as much as 5-10 thou'.
40 is the maximum recommended overbore, although you can get 60 over pistons for it, they recommend against that as that takes you into casting shift territory, running the risk of going through the cylinder wall.

I'm just going to put this one together. It'll run but it'll be sloppy. Eventually I'll either build up the spare block, which is rusty but at stock bore so that can be machined easily to the next size up.
Or look for another engine.

Well, it's an asset with value in excess of $0 being transferred across state lines so they want their taxes on the purchase.

Don't you just do what the Aussies do and stick a nominal value down to keep the account of tax you pay on transfer low?

I like the sound of the US system (in theory at least). It might cut down on the number of vehicles that are apparently “unregistered” here. In theory we have a fine for not registering a change of keeper but I bet no-one is ever actually done for it.

Be careful what you wish for - don't forget some States have an annual possessions tax based on the value of your assets using information from your insurers - so that hot rod you built that is now worth strong money suddenly is going to cost a significant amount of money every year even if it doesn't turn a wheel..

True....We very nearly had a "possession" tax here for vehicles off-the-road.
