Did those suffer a Pooburg like the later ones?

I'm fairly certain that they did although it may have been Solex.
It was a nightmare having to heel and toe just to stop it from stalling before it'd warmed up.

Moderns I'd love to own
Ferrari 348 TS - unfortunately getting progressively more expensive
Lotus Elise - still affordable but getting pricey, especially for a S1
Aston Martin V8 Vantage - again affordable and just starting to uptick in price but loads about still and probably always will be
Mustang GT - nearly did on a finance offer but I know I'd get bored as only car

Classics I'd love to own
Lotus Elan - original one, not the newer FWD rubbish
MGC GT - probably the only car I'd chop my MGB GT in for
Jaguar XK120/150 - once the generation that really remember them dies off maybe they'll become affordable
60s Mustang Fastback - you know exactly the one

Cars I'd buy again
Smart Roadster - only car I've owned that really regret selling but I'd get coupe next time
ADO16 - 2dr 1300 spec next time
Clio II 182 - I have the 172 but still would prefer the 182
MX-5 MK1 NA - Bloody loved that car and first proper sports car I owned, but probably wouldn't have quite the same appeal again

Classics I'd want and achievable in near future
Morris Minor Traveller - nearly did but I'd probably get a project one as so much cheaper than good ones
MG Midget - they look an absolute blast
Triumph Spitfire/GT6 - would prefer the GT6 and would be ace to have it with the MGB
Mini - no further comment needed

You got me thinking...I've only in recent years bought a car with over 100hp and that was the 2.0 litre 306 cabrio. Everything else has been less, often way less.

Only exception I can think of was a Volvo 240 estate hand-me-down that had a B230A engine which is just a little over 100hp, but I didn't buy that one.

The BMW 316 I have right now is actually the smallest engine I've owned! It's also the longest I've had a car, and it's not going anywhere soon either. It just does everything.

Ah yes, a Solex by Pierburg or some such marriage in hell. Mine used to go over-centre on full throttle and jam open.....

I never had that happen but after being used to driving cars with manual chokes it was incredibly annoying to say the least, especially as all of the rest of the car was so much better than the Viva HC it replaced.

I do however long for the days when just putting a manual choke conversion on a car solved it's warm up and cold idling issues....

Which is funny because the original cold start/run system on the Pontiac works just fine. Automatic choke and all.

I don't know if I actually want anything new. I have the cars I like.

Would own a Hillman Super Minx again, for nostalgic reasons.
