Focus CC - possible impulse buy

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Aircon in a convertible is a great thing to have. Even if at the very least it's keeping your feet cool. Especially when it gets really hot and sticky...

I drove a Mustang convertible across Death Valley in 47C heat with the roof down and Aircon on full. They had a very effective unit!

MX5 MK3 disables the Aircon with the roof down. Stupid design. Presumably the compressor in them can't keep up with the duty cycles with a roof down.

FTFY.

Because no aircon in a convertible is proper design.

What's the advantages of not having Aircon in a convertible?

I can think of many disadvantage - sweaty moobs, sweaty sticky balls, sweaty smelly feet and overheating face.

New Pod will have a macro driven spreadsheet on pence saved on a journey by not having a compressor to drive.

As far as I am concerned it is a nice thing to have and used with roof up. I can’t imagine I would have the roof down on a hot sticky day in a traffic jam - and let’s face it, just about every major road around Norfolk is being dug up for some reason, every single central reservation barrier is being replaced, and on the rare stretches of un-coned carriageway some twanny has driven its car onto its roof and needs to be cut out.

Roof up, a/c on and dream about having a helicopter instead.

I'm sure I've read that modern AC uses less energy to run than it takes to overcome the extra drag of having all the windows open.

Anyway, both times we needed the aircon on full as it was so hot in blazing sunshine
If it's hot - roof down
If it's cold - roof down and heater on.

It's never "so hot in the blazing sunshine" in the UK.
This all day long.
Apparently the U.K. buys more convertibles than any other European country so why do I see so many people driving with the roof up in the summer. WTF?

My shitbox Mx5 had the hood down everywhere I went as long as it wasn’t raining.

When I had my Maserati Spyder I took it to Le Mans, on the way down we had hood down all the way and both got burnt to buggery. When we came back it was so much nicer with the hood up and air con on. It was also a lot more economical with the hood up. I shouldn't have convertibles really as I never really drive them with the hood down

My Midget used to be roof down all the time if it wasn't raining too hard too, it's the whole point of buying a car with the roof missing.

Currently my MG will be driven open to the elements as the 2nd hand hood I bought is in the garage awaiting my missus getting around to fitting it. I've had a hardtop, given to me by an ex boss, for 40 odd years but never fitted it and I don't plan on doing so.
