Right, here's one for the Irish contingent on here.

I've got my car for sale on Car&Classic. But the only calls I'm getting are from the Irish. I've had several different callers now. Which would make sense if I was in Ireland, but I'm not. So my question is, what is the cost of importing an old UK car into the republic of Ireland? I'm guessing the taxes cost more than the car?

Because of this, I'm deeply suspicious as to their intent. Also, some of the calls have been less than genial shall we say. I lack retail experience these days.

The flip-side is the auctioneers Matthewsons have more or less assured me that they can get me what I want for the car. The only problem is....getting the time to get it there.

Advice greatly appreciated.

My average selling ratio is one car per decade so I am no expert! However, listing my 190E on both Ebay and Car&Classic simply elicited a stream of idiocy, yes many Irish accents as well - mostly concerned with a fictitious cat which mine didn't have and asking questions that were answered in the description. "I'm down your way next week with cash if you can wait" that kind of shit.

In the end I consigned it to Southern Car Auctions at Poole for their classic sale. They stored the car free of charge, meaning I could release a lockup garage, cancel the tax and insurance and basically forget about the car. 10pc commission, minimum £250 and I ended up with the same amount of money in my pocket as I had in mind from the adverts.

If I do it again I will definitely go the classic car auction route - even if you factor in a transport cost.

1) They Irish buy Mercs and diesels.
2) If the car is under 30 years old it, you'd have to be fucking crackers to import it as the taxes would be astronomical. (Although if it is very close to 30 years old, they'll stick it in a shed and registers it after it's major birthday)

Starting with...

Import duty, if "country of origin" rules mean it's not considered GB made, e.g. German luxobarge. Then that'll be 10% duty. On top of that another 23% VAT. After that there is Vehicle Regsitration Tax (VRT). That's charged in two parts, the CO2 part, which is defaults to the highest band if there is no emissions data. It is also based on Mr O'Taxman's made up Open Market Selling Price (OMSP), which isn't based in reality, unlike importy duty which is based on landed cost. Also the OMSP is notionally never below €2k, so that part of the bill is 37% (or less) of €2k, which is another €740. The second part is new since 1/1/2020 and that is the NOx charge. This is based on WLTP figures or converted NEDC figures. Basically adds up to €600 on a petrol car or up to €4850 on a diesel.

So

• Duty 0 - 10%
• VAT - 23%
• VRT CO2 - 7% to 37% of OMSP (OMSP => €2000)
• VRT NOx - up to €600 petrol, €4850 diesel.
• Annual Motor Tax - upwards to €2400 depending on cc or CO2 emissions.

3) Cars over 30 years old will be far more attractive. NCT every two years until 40, €200 flat-rate VRT and €56 Motor Tax, but now liable for import and VAT. Can stick another third on top of the price.

tl;dr More hassle than it's worth now to import. Anyone thinking it isn't is either a trader buying newish VAT-qualifying cars or a fucking dreamer.

Its well under 30 years old. Its a Honda Petrol auto, so it drinks like a Geordie Shore celebrity.

Is it Irish or Northern Irish? Us lot (the latter) do bring a lot of cars over. As we are in the UK the same rules apply to us, same DVLA etc.

The big difference is price - supply and demand compared to the mainland means your car will potentially be worth more here than there. Especially true of anything remotely performance related or rare.

In the UK, but also in the EU customs union, government MOT centres, MOT from 4 years old. MOT discs. Delayed rolling 40 year MOT exemption because the MLAs weren't sitting, Irish sea border, 15% corporation tax, couriers charging extra, R plates(?), no mandatory butcher's apron on the driving licence photocard.

So yes, those same rules that aren't the same.

I meant in regards to owning a motor vehicle - we don't have to do anything additional if we bring one over from England.

We can keep the same plate, the logbook will be sorted by the same DVLA, the MOT will be valid, we pay the same people for the road tax.
