Re:Another Hideous Yank
Re: Hideous Yank
Buick has had a slight hiccup
Nothing serious, just the ignition lock barrel playing up.
New one was 18 dollars from Rockauto.
Ordered Sunday evening arrived Thursday morning
Shouldn't take long to fit right ?
First hurdle was getting the steering wheel off, so I cobbled together a puller out of various bits of hardware, washers and long bolts.
Next is a retaining plate held in place by a snap ring. The manual says you need a special tool for this. Obviously I ignored the manual and used inappropriate tools.
Next is the indicator mechanism, three screws and tilt it out of the way.
One more torx and the ignition barrel falls out.
Now just reverse the procedure
This is where the special tool comes in handy
It's also when I spent half a day fighting that snap ring and lock plate before deciding to give up and make a tool. Simple you'd think... Fuck knows what thread it is but it isn't metric, eventually found an ancient hole saw with the same thread so butchered that to make a tool.
Easy peasy with the right tool
All back together and felling a bit chuffed with myself I discovered the dip switch doesn't work
So took it all apart again.
Where's the dip switch?
Under the dash obviously.
Controlled by a plunger and convoluted steel rod.
It appears my bashing about has dissloged the rod
Now half the dash has to be removed to get to it
You also need long skinny double jointed fingers.
Put it all back together again.
Now the horn is on all the time
Took it all apart again and discovered a bent contact.
Put it all back together again, successfully this time
Appart from the above the cars been absolutely fine...

Sounds like one of my jobs and that's why I started using professionals and we know how that ended.
I'm going back on the tools.

Re: Hideous Yank
I do like my Yank motors but some of their switchgear designs are worse even than BMWs.

Junkman expressed an interest, anyone got an email for him?

I might be wrong but I think he's still in touch with the Northern Powerhouse mob on here. Hooli or the Rev could say.

Re: Hideous Yank
If ever a thread could make you snigger by reading the first and last pages it would be based on this one.
From the first page where it has you thinking "The people who made this vehicle, have they ever seen a car before, a real one"
To the last page where a simple repair has cascaded into a fire fighting exercise to fix collateral damage.
Sir, I salute you.
I have had three 'Merkin vehicles and two of them I gave away.
