Re: Dangel 504 Pickup bits needed. Page 13
The pickup has now been awoken from its slumber and has moved from its previous position! One of the rear wheels didn't want to turn but soon freed off after giving it a proper twatting with a large piece of wood. Low box seems to work in all gears as does the hi-box. It started after a couple of coughs and splutters and a can of something explosive sprayed down the inlet to get the fuel pumped up to it then sat there idling perfectly!
The hub has been fitted as a temporary measure. I may build it up with weld and have it put back in the lathe if we can't find a replacement. Ian Kirkwood sadly wasn't able to help and has suggested contacting Dangel directly instead. There seems to be some proper camber going on with the front wheels that I don't remember but I do think it looks the part
Mikey is meant to be ringing the parts place kindly linked to on the other age but hasn't as yet I don't think?

Bed sides are proving elusive so I may have to try and make some panels. I'm thinking of buying an air powered joggler and punch to try and minimise the distortion on what's going to be one hell of length of fucking weld x2

Probably a moronic comment but do the bed sides need to be metal?
If not how about fibreglass or even wood? If the former you could possibly use the existing sides as part of a mould.

Woods actually a good suggestion, there seems to be many about with wooden backs looking on Google photos. I've got access to an ancient 8 foot sheet metal folder though and I'm really not bad with a MIG tbh so thought I'd have a go. I'm going to cut a 3" vertical strip out and take it to the folder, then mark off a piece of metal and see how close I can get it. If I mark the pivot points on the folder with pen and number them accordingly I should be able to replicate it in full size? That's the rough idea for now anyway. I'd quite like to keep it looking as standard as possible if I can.

Del the blacksmith suggested this too so I may order some if it comes back in stock. The joggler could well make it redundant though.

Whole thing looks like either a world of pain or a really good earner, depending what the deal is!

I won't be doing it for nothing after the Justy debacle...
The body panels aren't too clever but I think the chassis on the whole is ok? Really need to find a donor vehicle tbh.
The exhaust is a really odd design I've not seen before.
It cleaned up a bit and managed to get the door glass roughly back in to keep the elements out. There are various bits and pieces that have come with it and the spare bench seat is at the trimmers up the road to be redone in vinyl, the door cards I got last week will be going to the same bloke too.

I had a quick look over this ahain yesterday, removing that rear bed is not as I hoped, it's going to be a right twat. It doesn't unbolt at all, it's all spot welded together and at some point has been pretty much welded to the bulkhead too when it was replaced.
There's a U section member that needs total replacement, not sure on the other side. The one rear shock absorber has completely broken it's mount after being bodged at some point.
Looking a bit better at the vacuum pipes I followed them along to the gearbox, so it looks like it has a centre diff lock and not front and rear as i initially thought.
All in all not too bad underneath by the looks of it. A bit of welding to do and loads of surface rust to remove. It really is built out the box to perform off road looking at the way it's constructed and the standard bash played fitted. No wonder they have the reputation for longevity.

Centre diff lock is the most important one, it's all LRs came with as standard when they went to perm 4WD.

I'm glad to hear it. I had a SWB Series III as my first vehicle, absolutely fucking useless if it got cross axled.

Well you'll still get stuck cross-axled. Centre diff lock in a perm 4WD replicates how your Series was in 4WD. Without the centre locked, just one wheel spinning would stop you. Trying to climb a hill in a Disco with the centre diff open was an exercise in futility for example. It'd just spin a front wheel & stop.Scruffy Bodger wrote: ↑Mon Jun 15, 2020 11:28 amI'm glad to hear it. I had a SWB Series III as my first vehicle, absolutely fucking useless if it got cross axled.
