I figured being as the set was nearly finished that I would paint the front up as it should be; dull military silver with a black grille. I went to the hardware store to find a match.

Painted the grille black and made a foam rubber cone to try and mimic the original one it would have had.

Yup. Straightforward method, too.
Cut out the shape you want in paper, then draw around it.

Using a fine diamond tip at 25,000 RPM roughly cut the shape out then go over the fine detail with a combination of the diamond bit and a spiral mill bit.

You just gotta work at the speed of the plastic without melting it.
