Found the fault. The top mount is more stubby on these than the last pair, by about 1/8" and as such haven't been clearing the top mount on full compression.

Car currently out of service with a case of Low. Ordered a new pair of shocks.

Didn't you save the pair you took off previously just in case?

First drive report:

It's chilly. 2.7°c (37°f). The dew on the car has gone strange.

Ride quality is restored. Gearbox changes well, though 2-3 is a little sluggish. That's been improving (normal Hydra-Matic things). Lending more credence to requiring a heavier oil for what those northerners who designed the gearbox call "summer" temperatures.

Best I could do with a 4½" angle grinder with an 0.8mm cutting disc in the space available, without setting my arm or the fuel tank on fire.
