Ho. Lee. Sheet.
Just found my first "Really Scary to think I drove this" item on the Pontiac.
Let's play "What is missing from the brake clevis", shall we, boys and girls?
The rest of the time was spent cleaning the frame rail, brake master cylinder and steering box exterior. Still a lot more to do but that's as long as I was willing to lay on the front clip and engine mounts tonight.

It looks as though that rod will not come off the clevis with the main pivot in place.
Still wouldn't want it rattling around though!

No, not easily- though if misadjusted to be too short it can jump out of the divot in the master cylinder piston and fall off.
If it's that loose I think you'd be screwed anyway.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
Little wonder this would catch on the brake pedal as it was depressed. It would also sometimes cheekily stop the pedal from returning all the way, too.
Bashed it straight with a hammer, scrubbed it clean, wow brushed the rust and applied rust converter.
Etch primed and painted in Nearly The Correct Blue.
While I was at it, I did the other two pieces that make up the toe-board around the pedals.
That's enough for tonight.

Sound deadening fitted.
Top and bottom toe-board panels fitted, missing 3 bolts.
Viewed from engine compartment, shows it should look nice once it's all cleaned up and painted.
Brake pedal moves smoothly now...

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
In a hugely exciting installment, I bought 88¢ of bolts.
I also found, hiding in the chassis rail, a piece of metal specific to "H" VIN cars- clutch pedal blanking plate!
Cleaned and painted that up.
I pulled my back out last night so updates will be slow again.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
I surprised myself tonight.
Didn't think to before but I offered that blue up against the paintwork. That's not actually a bad color match for something off the shelf at Wal-Mart. That's where the plate fits, held snug by the felt insulation. Fully held down with new bolts (glad I bought one extra, as I dropped the first one and it vanished off under the car to be found in the tread of the tires later). No squeaks, rattles or anything untoward.
