The switch came apart again and indeed yes it looks a little melted.

Pried it apart. Presto, it is spring loaded. Filed it back to the shape it should be.

Nice smooth operation now. Just needs a new lens, but people are making reproduction ones for this particular lamp which is nice.

Yup. Every single bit of it works. Key slot, shifter light, everything.

Fitted the antenna. It goes up and down.

Because polite people do not extend their antenna manually.

Plus, the car had an automatic antenna from the factory with the checking of the radio option.
Just don't look too closely because this one is German.

Got home late tonight, ended up just tidying up the garage a bit and making a start on the metalwork for the alternator. First, make the garage even hotter than it needs to be by making bar stock cherry red.

Then, with 2 pairs of pliers, bend the bar through a right angle and let cool naturally.

While they were cooling down, I painted the radiator black.

Cut, drill, file. Bracket starting to come together. Ran out of time tonight.

Stupid question - wouldn't there be some GM alternator brackets in a nearby scrapyard?
Then again, it's been a while since these were current (pun intended).

The answer to that is "maybe but probably not"; I didn't want to explore a maybe option when instead I could make something that I know will work.

Plus, I had the metal already. The only scrapyard nearby is full of modern tat. The only vaguely interesting thing they have is a '56-'60 DeSoto Adventurer that was parked on top of another car for a long time, now dragged to the front of the lot. (I always wondered on these if Triumph copied DeSoto for the shape of the back of the car for the Herald and the lights or if they actually got somewhere first in terms of styling...)
