I had been looking at pictures of Chieftains, and one thing that stood out, time and time again was there glovebox lid emblem. Mine looks to have been silver originally, while most I've seen have been red.

I decided to try and sort it out because someone has an the same thing and painted the back red. Net result, blotchy silvered red. Horrible.

I just couldn't get the paint out it the divots and I think the plastic would dissolve before the paint off I were to use chemicals.

It still looks like crap. I may end up sanding the back down smooth and painting it red, just to even up the color.
Thoughts?

You have to completely strip the plastic of all paint first.
It should be possible to take it out of the diecast part, they are usually just clipped in somehow.
You then put the plastic bit in a ziplock bag and spray a healthy amount of oven cleaner in it,
but not the type for hypocrit lefty cunts. You need the one containing sodium hypochloride.
Zip it up and leave it for a few days, watch witchcraft happen.
You then have to paint the back side with a translucent red first, carefully omitting the script. You can use Tamiya clear red, or taillight paint. Once that is thoroughly hardened, you spray the entire back side silver.

Well, that is what I was attempting to do mechanically with the brass brush- not impact the plastic too heavily (it can be polished again).
My concern is that the front is crazed quite badly from the sunshine. It does look to be made from PMMA.
The plastic will hopefully unclip from the metal, being pot metal I'm worried it'll fracture when I try bend it back but we can try. Worst comes to worst I can fix the plastic back in with hot glue.
I shall try find some oven cleaner with that in and give it a whirl. I can see that having been silvered with white lettering- although seemingly rare I do prefer the red. I have some Tamiya red lacquer, I was using it on the wheel trims and lettering.
Thanks

Is it Tamiya clear red?
As in the stuff used for simulating taillights on models?

This is the oven cleaner I have.
It appears to be dissolving the can that it's in.

Everything plus the kitchen sink.

Oven cleaner was a good call. Also took the front down gently with 800 grit, then back up on the buffing wheel.
Next up, cream paint in the letters. It's all gotta dry thoroughly though.

Ok, I'm going to call upon the model makers of you.
Cream color paint dripped into the lettering, that's happening, as said. However, I can paint plain red, or should I paint red lacquer then silver paint behind, and will the effect actually work?
Thoughts on see-through acrylic on a postcard.

I think just plain red is the way forward today. Would get it vacuum metalized in red if the plastic were in better condition.

Used a piece of phone wire to dip cream paint into the words.

Good coverage of the red, considering it's on to a textured surface.

All up on the glovebox. It's not perfect but it's a great improvement. It makes me happier.
