What did you do today?

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

After some more back and forth with the seller of the MG Midget, it's now just waiting for a free time to be collected. He wanted £250 deposit immediately but that is a big NOPE from me. Not least I'm putting money and risk having Ceri go up to transport it with the potential of paying for him to drive an empty trailer back. So if the seller bails or the paperwork isn't in order, I'll have to pay those costs already and I'm not risking sending money to some random person.

When it arrives I think it'll go straight into storage so it doesn't distract me from my other projects I need to get finished. So won't be much detail or project work on it for a good few months at least. Will get someone to do a check over on the brakes and general condition, so at least I can use it first. I've made a pact with myself that I'll avoid any major prodding upon its arrival...

In other related news, bought Practical Classics March 1996 issue with a rather nice looking MG Midget on the front. Looks a bit familiar Image

When I got my current vehicle it had its original radio cassette so I eventually replaced it with this Blaupunkt. Even with very little use it soon packed up so I removed it to have a look inside. Problem solved, they forgot to put the works in there. Utter garbage.

What's wrong with not having much in? As semiconductor node sizes shrink and become economical to make, more now can be consolidated into single devices.

Heatsink part is the speaker driver (probably containing the overload protection already). Right hand IC by the antenna connection is the combined FM/AM and possibly DAB receiver with almost all the associated (previously bulky) analogue circuitry. Left hand side is mostly power supply. Middle CSC2313F part is the sound processor that takes various audio sources and does things like volume/fading/switching/etc. The part with the H on is the main processor - this does the display interface and very likely the Bluetooth functionality all in one chip. Then there will be a EEPROM for memory storage. Finally there maybe another IC in the display that does the screen driving.

Older radios would have multiple parts to do each function. E.g. instead of that single audio processing chip, it would have analogue circuitry to switch the inputs, another set for volume, another for fading, another for balance, etc, etc.

Also a lot of room is saved by not having the
physical mechanical mechanism of a CD or Tape player.

Basically this is why these are like £50 now, not £150. Might be disappointing to look at the empty space but most people don't open them. Those that don't would be more disappointed if they open the cardboard box to find it was only a couple centimetres thick.

Haven't been for a while, they are basically a rebadge of generic designs really.

Can you remember robocop where he was holding the guy hostage. He was wanting a brand new 6000 sux. The cop said of course, we'll even throw in a blaupunkt!
Robocop was 1988 iirc.

My Freaklander has been making a horrible metallic rattle on start up. A quick look on some Land Rover forums suggested either the cam belt or auxiliary belt tensioners. Whilst it was quiet at work yesterday I popped it over the pit for a quick look. Much to my relief it was just a heat shield touching the exhaust so a quick bend was all that was needed. Trouble is with Land Rover forums that they are littered with unqualified experts. I guess it’s the same with other marque specific forums.
