What did you do today?

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

I better post this here, as mercrocker can tell me all what is dodgy about it first, before I hand over any cash. He's pretty good at spotting such things. (I'm just shite at it)

They are cute aren't they? I think I've got rear brake shoes, a Moutney steering wheel boss & a windscreen frame for one around still.

When I got my current vehicle it had its original radio cassette so I eventually replaced it with this Blaupunkt. Even with very little use it soon packed up so I removed it to have a look inside. Problem solved, they forgot to put the works in there. Utter garbage.

What's wrong with not having much in? As semiconductor node sizes shrink and become economical to make, more now can be consolidated into single devices.

Heatsink part is the speaker driver (probably containing the overload protection already). Right hand IC by the antenna connection is the combined FM/AM and possibly DAB receiver with almost all the associated (previously bulky) analogue circuitry. Left hand side is mostly power supply. Middle CSC2313F part is the sound processor that takes various audio sources and does things like volume/fading/switching/etc. The part with the H on is the main processor - this does the display interface and very likely the Bluetooth functionality all in one chip. Then there will be a EEPROM for memory storage. Finally there maybe another IC in the display that does the screen driving.

Older radios would have multiple parts to do each function. E.g. instead of that single audio processing chip, it would have analogue circuitry to switch the inputs, another set for volume, another for fading, another for balance, etc, etc.

Also a lot of room is saved by not having the
physical mechanical mechanism of a CD or Tape player.

Basically this is why these are like £50 now, not £150. Might be disappointing to look at the empty space but most people don't open them. Those that don't would be more disappointed if they open the cardboard box to find it was only a couple centimetres thick.
What's fucking wrong with not having much in???. Here's the Blaupunkts predecessor, also virtually empty, which though I didn't bring it up to spare boring the arses off everyone, also failed after very little use.

I shoved another box of fresh air into the dashboard yesterday, this time a cheap one, the only purchasing criteria (now that I'd established that it wasn't worth paying for a 'name' brand), was that it could play flac files.

So what have we here? The poxy thing changes colour every few seconds, is blindingly bright at night, and there's no way to stop it. The sound is surprisingly good but after an hour's use the volume control ceased functioning until you turned off and back on, then it would work again for a few minutes. The front plastic panel was too hot to touch(!!!!!) so I dread to think how hot the rear heat sink was. It doesn't recognise anything except wma or MP3 files.
I don't actually care what's inside the box, but here's my gripe. My Sunbeam 90's radio was jammed with components and even had an extra box full of stuff . The sound had never been great, but though 60 years old you turned it on and after a short wait for the valves to warm up it still functioned.

I had something similar in a mk1 mx5 about six years ago. Just a cheap £40 ebay one and it was total shit and unfit for purpose. It would keep switching off and forget all the settings. The volume would randomly fluctuate and the sound quality was shocking.
I couldn't be arsed with sending it back and negged the seller iirc. Garbage. You're better off with an old sony head unit and a plug in dongle.

If that was £2250 then? I think you have a bloody good buy there; no wonder the old scrote is in a mood :D

Not quite. Paying £2.5k and after shipping and other bits it'll be nearer the £3k mark. Barrow is bloody miles away from everywhere.

He had a 2.5k reserve and then lowered it to 2250 in the hope it would hit it. But after the auction he thought that was far too cheap and glad it didn't sell for that. I'd like to have got it for that but knew he wouldn't bite. Anyway £250 is less than a day's work, so not worth quibbling to secure the deal.

£100 in panels (they're bloody cheap on this!) and £3k paint job would I reckon make a car that is still worth more than £6k. I just must not go poking too deeply into that a-pillar. The top of the sill looks a tad crusty nearer the hinge and I know they're very prone to rotting out there. Poke too much and I'll be having to strip all of that corner off.

I don't think £2.5k is too bad a price for it tbh. That included the hardtop as well.

£2.5k for a working chrome bumper Spridget sounds good to me.
