Thank you squire. Nice is not how most people who know me describe them!
One day I might treat myself to a proper classic, in fact I came very close to buying a midget last year.

I've decided I prefer to waft rather than race which is why the Olds is my favourite and also why this month I kept the omega and sold the S60 Volvo with its 200bhp and firm suspension. I've had a few heaps over the years that waft like my Volvo 240 estate and merc 230TE estate. I should probably get a yank estate.

I'm surprised that no one fitted them with JATO rockets as the acceleration with 100 gallons on board must have been abysmal.

Any news on the Olds motor yet?

Excellent. I wish I'd had a closer look at it during SF. In all probability I'll be selling the Midget later this year, as I too prefer comfortable saloons. I have to honour my promise to give the chap I bought it off, the first refusal, before offering it elsewhere.

Had the gents round this evening for a cup of tea and a look at the Olds.
Five of them with a combined age of at least 360 years.

One brought a diesel compression tester, but they knew what was wrong as soon as they heard it run. Blown head gasket between two cylinders. The tester confirmed it was between the middle two cylinders on the left bank.

Lindsay, our newest member, had raced American cars and said to use Summit Racing to supply parts.

Looks like they haves gasket set for the 5.7 diesel.

I found an exploded diagram that shows how the pump is driven, as this has to come off. Looks similar to the shaft of a distributor, so setting the timing want be an issue.


Getting the exhaust manifold bolts out will be the biggest pain, probably.

I'll make a start tomorrow.
